I'm watching todays UT4 twitch stream, and at about 18 minutes in, while they are talking about what makes a game cool and fun, they talk about Chaos
http://www.twitch.tv/unrealtournament/b/550469071
It will be copied to youtube soon, but it is not there as I write this
https://www.youtube.com/user/EpicUnrealTournament

I also never knew Flak was the proxy voice :proxy:

*EDIT* Youtube version now online. Goto 13 minutes

Hi.

I was poked in IRC about this, so I came to view it.

First thought, always nice to see Chaos get a positive nostalgic mention, so yay for that.

Just for light-hearted conversation about what was being discussed, I would like to respectfully agree & disagree with Mr. Brown on his comments. He was saying how important it was that when he sees someone approach with a rocket launcher, that he knows what that weapon is capable of, and so he can play accordingly. Obviously, I could not agree more. Important game-play bit there. However, he then kinda says that (paraphrasing here), when you get into mods like Chaos, with all their 'crazy' weapons, that doesn't matter anymore, and it's all just for fun at that point. Well, yes and no.

- Yes, because Chaos IS all about fun. That's why games are made, why the hell would I play a game or a mod if it's not fun. Everything else is secondary.

- No, because what he said about knowing what an opponent is capable of with his rocket launcher, is just as true with every single Chaos weapon as well. There are just more of them to learn. And more interactions between them to learn. More depth. There is no loss to that important game-play feature that he was making a point about. Follow me? In other words, maybe HE loses track of how to counteract certain weapons in Chaos, but I do not. flaggrules

This is kinda the same point I have made time and again through the years about when people 'review' Chaos for some web site or something. It's not the kind of mod you can run through for a couple hours and then know how to rate it, what works, what sucks, etc. You have to spend some time with it, and really get to know it.

Still more chat on this topic (because you got me started!) - Jump into the wayback machine though, and look at Q2Chaos. Back then the devs thought it nice to put in the server configs the ability to raise or lower the damage amounts done by each weapon. I always said that was going a step too far. Because then what Mr. Brown says really does come into focus. A RL on one server might no longer play the same as a RL on another server.

Oh, and also - Flak was not "the" proxy voice, but she did contribute some voices to the mix. We wanted to have some of the voices be based off of a female voice, so we asked, and she was kind enough to do so.

Thanks for letting me know about the brief mention, I still enjoy chatting about Chaos (As you can see. What can I say, I still like to hear myself talk).

Well they didn't go into any depth or mention how Chaos handles.
I didn't get the impression they were meaning the Chaos mod was unpredictable, but that it was an example of how it went beyond what they imagined would work, and shows if you get it right, it does not matter you can't tell what an enemies weapon is capable of, or what weapon they have, when you are having fun.
Each UT weapon already has 2 firing modes, and often very different, and with a combo, but you cannot predict which button a player will choose, or how much ammo they have.
I don't think that was the point they were trying to make.

I know if someone runs at me with the crossbow or grenade launcher, I don't actually care what ammo they have, because I still just want to shoot them with whatever I have, or die while changing weapons.
I only worry about what the enemy is carrying if I have time or distance for it. I am more worried about where they are going.
Then I change my weapon or tactics.
I know if I am faced with someone using a pistol or rifle, that I have a good chance of blocking the bullets with a sword as I run at them, but I still need the time to swap, dodge or run.

None of them will have played half as much Chaos anyway (or as recently), so it is simply based on fun memories of a mod that fluidly added loads of variety, without messing the balance.
I think perhaps you read more into what they said, than they meant.

Eh, maybe so, fair enough. No biggie either way. Just nice to still chat about Chaos/game design once in awhile. Good memories.

It's funny this comes up because I recently found a video on Youtube where a fan had played a bunch of the proxy voices and it got me reminiscing about the good old days.

Here's the video: http://youtu.be/JTJzJtOANac

It's not all of the voices, but its a bunch of them. I posted comments about who contributed the voices from what I could remember, but my memory isn't the best. Does anyone know where the original proxy voices came from? I always assumed Spa had resampled them from various sources, since alot of them don't sound like the same source. Also, I thought the female ones were a contribution. But it was so long ago, It's hard to remember the details.

Hmm. Maybe there should be a Chaos Historical Society, to keep track of all the historical facts that might get lost over time.

Hi Rob.

The Q2 1.11 manual lists Spa for 'sound', so I'm assuming he did the 1st voices. How exactly he did them, got them, mixed them, whatever, I have no idea. I'm sure the question was asked at some point, but I don't remember.

Always good to see you, hope you and yours are well.

Thanks for the well wishes. Same to you, of course.

Yes, I still lurk around here sometimes. Once you go Chaos, you never really go back. Sometimes I still wish I could get a Proxy Launcher when playing Warframe. Love those little guys.

I find it beautiful, fascinating, and just plain interesting, the extent to which Chaos is mentioned in the UT4 forums, especially the games design area.

Obviously it's cool and all, nice to see the hard work so many guys did to be remembered so well. But also, can't help but wonder..., 'oh but for the lack of a coder ... what could be'. I mean, obviously we did something people noticed.

Quotes from the UT4 public forum - just the ones I've gotten to for now anyway
(none of these are from Chaotic Dreams members, btw):
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/for ... Tournament
Chaos UT '99 had this exact grapple hook -- it was the best grapple hook ever put in a game, and made playing on Crane one of the best UT experiences that could be had...
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post44397
The Chaos UT mod that shipped with UT 99 GOTY added in a second ammo type for sniper rifles that gave you "exploding" rounds, they had travel time [it was fast, but they had travel time] and the refire rate was slower...

This makes both weapons functionally different giving them a perfect reason to exist next to each other.
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post32806
So yea, melee bashing madness over an Impact Hammer for me.
One thing that was also completely boss was the melee sword in UT99's Chaos.
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post73036
There's still lot's of weapons missing from ChaosUT, which comes in the GOTY edition of UT99....most of these don't add anything to a competitive shooter, they're still insanely fun to fool around with.
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post50383
Ah I would love to see Chaos Mod wether new or old return. Especially those mines and their evil laugh.
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post52385
Seconded, ChaosUT had some crazy weapons!
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post64349
Yes indeed Chaos is all about fun.
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post88907
Im a huge fan of chaos ... I do love the grav belt and vortex
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post87330
As for Chaos, definitely get them making a ChaosUT for UT4. I loved their nods, especially the proxies...
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post87295
Chaos UT should be nice too.
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post40866
I would love to see mods such as Chaos make a triumphant return.
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post36011
The Slug Rifle from UT99's Chaos Pack. In fact, If nobody else remakes the Chaos Pack I will!
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post31005
Seeing as Chaos UT was included with the GOTY edition, and had some very neat mods for it's sequel. Why don't we ask the still active Chaotic Dreams team to join us in our project? ..... Come on, we all want the proxy mines back.
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post30155
Chaos was always one of my favorite mods, ...My favorite gun was the gravity vortex
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post53585
don't shy away from crazy, outrageous weapons...., and my favorite from the Chaos Mod, happy bouncing proxy mines!
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post32100
Primary fire: A fragile razor disc. Bounces off walls once, breaks into damaging shards when it hits a second wall. This idea is a bit inspired by the ChaosUT2 Cutter alt fire
https://forums.unrealtournament.com/sho ... #post75064
ailbreak is by far my favorite gametype of any game ever...
Combine that with ChaosUT2 mod and I don't think i'll ever have a better gaming experience in my life.

damn... chaos ut was soooo cool!
