Hi.
I was poked in IRC about this, so I came to view it.
First thought, always nice to see Chaos get a positive nostalgic mention, so yay for that.
Just for light-hearted conversation about what was being discussed, I would like to respectfully agree & disagree with Mr. Brown on his comments. He was saying how important it was that when he sees someone approach with a rocket launcher, that he knows what that weapon is capable of, and so he can play accordingly. Obviously, I could not agree more. Important game-play bit there. However, he then kinda says that (paraphrasing here), when you get into mods like Chaos, with all their 'crazy' weapons, that doesn't matter anymore, and it's all just for fun at that point. Well, yes and no.
- Yes, because Chaos IS all about fun. That's why games are made, why the hell would I play a game or a mod if it's not fun. Everything else is secondary.
- No, because what he said about knowing what an opponent is capable of with his rocket launcher, is just as true with every single Chaos weapon as well. There are just more of them to learn. And more interactions between them to learn. More depth. There is no loss to that important game-play feature that he was making a point about. Follow me? In other words, maybe
HE loses track of how to counteract certain weapons in Chaos, but
I do not.
This is kinda the same point I have made time and again through the years about when people 'review' Chaos for some web site or something. It's not the kind of mod you can run through for a couple hours and then know how to rate it, what works, what sucks, etc. You have to spend some time with it, and really get to know it.
Still more chat on this topic (because you got me started!) - Jump into the wayback machine though, and look at Q2Chaos. Back then the devs thought it nice to put in the server configs the ability to raise or lower the damage amounts done by each weapon. I always said that was going a step too far. Because then what Mr. Brown says really does come into focus. A RL on one server might no longer play the same as a RL on another server.
Oh, and also - Flak was not "the" proxy voice, but she did contribute some voices to the mix. We wanted to have some of the voices be based off of a female voice, so we asked, and she was kind enough to do so.
Thanks for letting me know about the brief mention, I still enjoy chatting about Chaos (As you can see. What can I say, I still like to hear myself talk).
