I'm guessing its supposed to be an exaggerated foreward lunge, which makes sense in a swordfighting mod. Dodges go in the air and thus can easily cause you to swing right over your opponent's head. The smoke is my own addition, as I feel it adds a lot to the atmosphere. It seems like the larger weapons (hammer, mace, axe) have a tendancy to somtimes hit as soon as the attack button is pressed.
