Sneek Peek @ New Melee Weapons in action
I have to chime in here. I was so excitted to hear about them making an AVP movie two years ago. However once I hear who was writting it I was very worried. Not that I dont like Anderson guy. Just...well. The first 2 movies in the Alien saga were the best. Riddly Scott made the orignal alien one of the all time horror classics. I was so scared for about a week seeing that movie (mind you I was only 12 at the time). Then James Cameron stapped us in for a non-stop action packed, one of the top 10 action movies ever IMHO that was Aliens. He took Scott's Alien. Made it tougher, faster, smarter and showed us how bad a$$ the queen was. And we got such great sayings from that movie ("game over man, game over!"). The first preditor movie is also in my top 10 list of best action movies ever. You had the man himself, Arnie in probably one of his better characters. You had Jessie the body with his "I ain't got time to bleed" lines. You got to see the (back then) bad @ss soldiers whipe the floor with the rebels. Only then to be taken out on by one by the Predator. ahhhh great stuff!LoQtUS wrote:venalanatomica, Yea i watched AvP night before last and had to install Avp2 to get a little Alien and Pred action in. Talk about a creepy game. The human part is pretty freaky. hehehe.
Then the follow up those three great movies with "crap". Aliens 3 was more of a throw back to the first movie as it had just one alien. But I just did not get it. I did like how the showed the "aliens" sees as it ran. Aliens4 Resurection was also a throw back to Aliens were a group of them take out more marines. I did not care for the Ripply-Alien hybrid. However she was much hotter looking in this one Finally Predator 2...yeck. Not that I dont like Danny Glover. Just if it took all of Arnie's might to beat the first Predator. Then how can a street cop who is "too old for this sh*t" beet one? Again some nice ideas shown in the 2nd Pred movie. The changing of the vision modes. The other predator weapons. Again not bad. But not anywhere near the first one. The do make the first movie reference to AVP in that movie when Danny finds an Alien head in the Predators trophy room. Also Pred2 had Bill Paxton in it. Bill played Hudson in the Aliens movie as his characters were killed by both the aliens, predator
Anyways back to AVP. It had so much history. It had soo much potenial. But it failed on so many things. Not saying its a bad movie. I got it the day it came out on DVD and saw it at the theators. There are lots of plot points that did not add up. For example in the other movies the Aliens at least take some time to go from face huggers to full blown drones. In this movie the did it in only a few hours at best. Dont want to go into more detail as I dont want to spoil it for others. Again I am just sad as it could have been oh so much better...
Oh I agree. I was so freaked out playing it as a Marine. That first time the motion detector when off I about jumped out of my chair!venalanatomica wrote:avp2 is awesome, its only creepy as a marine tho, with the others you're invincible almost....cant wait to get some pred style combat tho
Its not that we did not want to do a 1st melee. It just that it has a lot of techical challanges. One challange for example is how to handle the first person animation. 1st animations don't exist in the real world. They are only drawn on your PC and will not show up or have any factor in on-line play. There is no way to handle how then to sync what people see in the 3rd veiw (the real world) with what you see in the 1st view. One thing I tried to do (as Beppo from INF gave me this idea) is to set the 3rd camera location a few units in front of the players "eyes". This way it gives you the same feeling as 1st. But it happens in the real world. Problem is that your own player model was clipping. And not in a good way. Very very bad clipping. So bad that we had to give up that idea. Thats just one of the issues we ran into. There were other minor issues we found out as well....venalanatomica wrote:ah ok. i take it getting melee weapons in first person is well hard yeah? i presume thats why f4 is locked in duel. Its a pity it didnt work out the claw was pretty cool, and first person melee would have been...interesting.
Jb
fair points;
i have to admit, i only reckon avp, alien 1 +2 and pred were the good ones in the series. The only thing with avp was the whole blink and everyone is dead bit....oh yeah, and a heavy pred would pwn an alien hand to hand with wristblades i reckon...
Ive heard rumours of a new avp game based on the source engine. im pretty hyped about this, but i reckon the d3 engine would probably be the better one, just for the amazing lighting and modelling possibilites.
I have to admit, i hated the d3 engine at first, but im starting to come round to it after seeing what the community has done with it (its no longer a corridor renderer!, it CAN do outside areas, and ffffing huge ones at that....). The source engine is becoming just like q2 but with fancy shaders and some karma stuff.....
Anyway, back to the claws; looking forward to them, they look kick a55!

I <bleep> that...
I do think that a good physics engine is probably one of the best things an FPS game can have, but I also agree the D3 engine offers more "atmosphere" possibilities. So, for a dark, creepy thriller type game, D3 is the natural choice. However, I've also seen some good stuff done with Source. Vampire: The Masquerade is a FPRPG which uses the Source engine, and it produces a nice atmospheric variety of dark and creepy surroundings, though a bit limited on the outdoor stuff (probably more because it takes place in an urban setting), so I think we might be pleasantly surprised. But as always, time will tell. I for one would like to see atmospheric mixed with awesome physics. Best of both worlds.

Fox is too cheap to buy the Doom 3 or Source engine. They prefer going for bottom of the barrel stuff like Monolith with their awful lithtech engine.
We're likely to see more console games with this franchise rather than a proper sequel on the PC. Whatever happened to that asstacular Predator Concrete Jungle?
