Yeah, I heard about that. Turns out, I'm a g'damned prophet, a soothesayer I tell you.

If it weren't for my mod involvement, I would have already considered Epic to be on my Do Not Buy list (just like Digital Extremes due to Pariah). You just can't keep selling unfinished games and expect your customers to keep buying them. Especially when you have been dishonest about the state of the game when you sold it to us, because now nothing they say about their next game will be taken at face value.

I have a much better - Entirely reasonable suggestion - they should simply stop trying to sell the PC version of UT. Make it free. Sell the engine, sell GOW, maybe even sell the console versions, I dunno. But the tech demo for their engine (the UT series) should be free. Having very populated servers and lots and lots of mods would be a great way to advertise their engine.

There are lots of things you could try on top of that. Maybe they create an online distribution system, and help mod teams sell mods, and take a small cut. Maybe instead of cold-heartedly cherry-picking ideas from their mod community, they could help and nurture and carry those mods over to retail games on their engine, and get a piece of that. Hell, I dunno, get creative.

Time to shake things up, and more of the same just isn't going to do it.
I was just ~6 years early on that one, but still, nailed it.

You may now don your burlap robes and sandals and seek my advice on the mountaintop. Single file please, one at a time.

Once you read it, you'll see why I posted there first.
Tell me if you think I over-sold it a bit

Thank you Doc.

Perhaps oversold just a bit, , but I love the enthusiasm and support just the same.

Glad you're here.

Now that certainly looks every inch like the Chaos sword.

BTW. A bit late in the day....years, but just a niggly thing that has annoyed me all these years.
"Bastard swords" are actually 1-edged swords. Same as a "bastard-file" that has 1 file edge and 1 smooth edge.

 *ahem* sorry about that, but I had to say it out loud

However having said that, I don't mind because I know of a large man with a huge Scottish Claymore named "Bastard" (they make the Chaos sword look like a knife).
If you ask him "why do you call it Bastard ?" he just scowls downwards at you and says "Because that's what it does".
:? The answer does not make any sense, but no one has ever asked him "What do you mean?". You just nod, look into your beer thoughtfully and walk away.
The sword was taller than me and I am about 5 feet 8 inches 8O
Any man that can wield a sword like that, you try not to annoy.

Oh, I should explain, he is a member of several period re-enactment societies.

http://www.medieval-life-and-times.info ... -sword.htm

Guess it depends on who you ask. If we were to get persnickety, we could suggest the handle on this one kinda-sorta-appears as if it's not for two hands, but then again, we don't want to be persnickety.

My Mum always said, don't be persnickety.

That clarifies where the mistake was made.
When it was explained to me, a Katana was also used as an example of a bastard because it has a single edge.
However as it refers to the size of handle, I can see the Katana would score on both counts.

Not sure about the quality of that site as the useful info is sandwiched between large chunks of self boasting/advertising.
It looks like there is more info than there really is.
Most unforgivable is that they don't even mention the most famous British sword, The Scottish Claymore :?
Here is some concise info without the extra BS http://www.thearma.org/terms4.htm (including the Claymore).

What I am now wondering is whether the usage of the word "Bastard" in English is derived from its use to describe "not belonging to either family of swords".

I am also wondering, if we had a Chaos Claymore, could we re-enact Braveheart ?
hehe...HAHAHA ......I am also imagining a very special taunt anim for a kilt-wearing Celtic warrior
*ahem*

Ok, so you're going to force me to be persnickety. Sigh.

No, it doesn't clarify anything, especially since it was a random site I googled few days ago, and Chaos has had a 'bastard' for years and years now. Nor have you established that any sort of mistake has been made. Actually, as I dug a bit deeper into the inter-webs, I have become more convinced that what we have posted in this thread is a perfect example of a 'bastard', since it's looking very much like a 'hand and a half' sword. Which, from what I can tell, seems to be the most common defining factor. Not the blade, but the handle. Interesting, eh?

And there are a number of resources I'm running across which seem to make it very clear, that there is nothing "clear" about this whole terminology business at all.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF_kxAqS_8k

Apparantly, lots of folks have used the terms for different things over the years, and there is no one person's definition which is the end-all point of reference to rule them all.

So, I think what you have succeeded at doing, is to force my hand (and a half) into showing that what we have is in fact perfectly reasonably referred to as a Bastard, and we can all now sleep comfortably on that knowledge.

But, as always - thanks for playing! :-D

:? Umm, did you read my post at all ?
You just agreed with me, agreeing with you.
So I will condense the whole thing into 1 sentence to make it clearer.

Once upon a time a mistake was made, explaining to me that the name was because of the blade, and I can read on both sites posted above that it is related to the handle size.

Now you can suggest all you like that a mistake was not proved, but as far as I see it (and after all, I was there), I was given some incorrect information many years ago, and he has no doubt explained the same misinformation to many other people over the past 20 years.

Perhaps you can re-read my post without looking for something not there ?
So thanks but I wont "play" debates on the net as it is not my style. I tend to be more forthright and questioning with no aspirations of winning something.
I actually hold a weekly debate and philosophy night on Fridays, and to be honest, you could arbitrarily choose me a subject and a stance (for, against or in the middle), and I will happily argue that thing down to a sub-atomic level.
That easily fills my quota for a week.
I never "play" at it. There are no points or prizes, and no winners. Facts don't care.
If you wanted to look at it in terms of winners and losers, then everyone that joins in through the often 6 hour sessions is a winner, if they learned something.

Personally I was far more interested (could you not tell ?) in the Chaos interpretation of the symbol of the Scottish warrior, and hoped would continue conversation in a similar manner.

My replies were meant as tongue-in-cheek the entire time. Just 'playing' my role as Defender of Chaos. Which requires me at times to wear my underwear outside of my pants.

Sorry if I offended, Doc. Because I'm glad that you're here, wearing a kilt or not.
