UT 99 ChaosUT v1.1 for Linux

Post by Netzpatron »

Hi there.

I know it's a long time passed since chaosut v1.1 was released. The mod works perfectly on Windows by installing the Umod file.
However, .umod files can only be installed on Windows and not on Linux which leads me to the question:
How to install ChaosUT v1.1 on Linux?

I have the ChaosUT GOTYE Mutator (v1.0?) installed which was on the second disk and it works pretty fine.
The missing utility gun and bugs in multiplayer are so annoying that I would like to "upgrade" the mutator.

I have downloaded the Upgrade from the Chaotic Dreams page and copied everything into the System folder.
After starting UT I went to the mutator tab and the "ChaosUT GOTYE Mutator" changed into "ChaosUT v1.1" so something has changed successfully.
But once I start the game UT crashes everytime.
When I disable ChaosUT the match starts as it should, so I guess anything is missing which makes the match not start.

Have you any idea what I could do?

regards

Hmm, same as my setup. I updated my GOTY edition, but it works fine.
I think used the full UMOD instead of the upgrade. Try that instead.
You should not need to copy anything to the system folder if you used the upgrade UMOD. Maybe you over-wrote something ?
Try the full UMOD.

For Linux and Mac users, they must get the plain ZIP versions, listed under each UMOD version.
If you want to host games you will need to manually add the serverpackage lines to the UT ini file (these are listed in the readme)

Hope that helps :D

(Note: I have all that also installed on my Windows, so I am able to play ChaosUT there at all time. However I would like to bting this to work for my cousin, who has Linux only unfortunately)

Serious problem with sound

Hey guys.
First of all, thank you Dr.Flay, it worked out like that.
I had to download the full chaosUT zip and replace everything.
Now chaosUT runs (visually) properly and I see the new stuff like the Utility gun without any lagging or crashing. It just works perfectly when it comes to visual points.

However, I tried all that without sound!!!
In order to bring UT99's sound to work, I have to make a little change in the UnrealTournamen.ini

Namely:
AudioDevice=ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem
into
AudioDevice=Audio.GenericAudioSubsystem

This is needed to have it work on PulseAudio, If I don't make that change, my whole UT (with or without ChaosUT) has a one or more likely two seconds audio delay, which is totally unenjoyable.

So when making this change, the delay is gone and UT sound works properly.

But:
This little change makes the proxies angry.
On ChaosUT v1.0 I can start the game but when I start a match, it directly crashes (without the mutator it still works ofc)
On ChaosUT v1.1 Unreal Tournament does not even start/run...

I almost reached my goal with making it work on Linux and now the sound kills me...

So hopefully someone can help me.
How to run ChaosUT with the .ini change?
ot
Any other way to remove the delay?

Thanks in advance guys! :)

I keep meaning to have a go at my own Linux install as practice.

There is a choice of using the real Linux install or VM eg. WINE.
Many people opt for VM for maximum compatibility.

Here are a few resources you should keep
http://wiki.unrealadmin.org/Unreal_Tournament (use to find the file names you need)
http://www.ibiblio.org/osg/Downloads/Linux/Installers/
http://liandri.beyondunreal.com/Unreal_ ... tial_Files
http://uttexture.com/UT/Website/Downloa ... inLess.htm

http://www.utpg.org (Patch 451b) only use if you do not use UEd
http://www.fileplanet.com/30714/0/0/0/1/section/Patches

Thankfully "Smirftsch" the dude responsible for the new video and audio renderers is a Linux user, and is the person to ask about problems.
Renderers and Linux section - http://www.oldunreal.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/ ... atselect=1
Any bugs need to be reported there, so the final version happens quicker ;)

One thing I did notice in the OpenAL int file, that you should fix it so it can be configured in the advanced window.
[Public]
Object=(Name=ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem,Class=Class,MetaClass=Engine.AudioSubsystem,Autodetect=)
:arrow: Preferences=(Caption="Audio"",Parent="Advanced Options")
Preferences=(Caption="ALAudio",Parent="Audio",Class=ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem,Immediate=True)

:!: Remove the extra " after the word Audio, on the line I point at above. There should not be 2 in a row.

I suggest you try the SwFmod renderer if you have any problems. It is intended to have the widest support.
OpenAL HW support was removed from Realtek and Creative Labs drivers since Vista, so it can be the best option for some (me included).

With these new audio renderers you can enable funky new features like Audio occlusion, which makes the sounds happening in the maps sound more realistic.

I was thinking about editing some of the Chaos maps and adding EFX audio settings to the various zones, but as I don't get much time, I may pick 1 or 2 to use as demos.
