Jb = Stinks at Huds

Post by jb »

Here is the current turret hud:

Image

It stinks. Its a rip from the xloc. With text on hud that displays Turrets stats:

- Mode of the turret (scanning, tracking, changing ammo, out of ammo)
- Health of turret
- Enemy of turret if it exists
- curret ammo count

So what I could use is a image of a better style. Also I am leary of hidding the curret players hud. I can but I would worry about loosing the HUD like we sometimes loose the xhair info. So until we get that one fixed I dont want to add another issue to it....

So got some ideas with images :)

Something thats obviously not final and with a few fillers, but just a general idea:

Image

Main part was the thing in the center with HUD surrounding it giving info. Add in some details to make it look roboty and make the edges a little less sharp on the main view

Oh yeah.. its big.. sorry

Hmm should I move/copy this to public section to see if they have a good idea on this?

Suppose that couldn't hurt Joe. I am probably gonna be happy as long as we get away from the xloc-cam looking stuff.

The turret info you have is fine with me too.

Jedi's version works for me. Just not those colors! hehe But yeah, I'd be happy with something like that, the further from the xloc the better IMO.

Moved. In our turrets you have an option to see what they are seeing through a "gun camera". The current display is posted above and yes I know its rotated 90 degrees which is a bug. So what other info do you think you want to see on the HUD? Jedi did a nice design (again thats just a rough draft) would you like to see it in that format? Or something else?

I don't have a pic of it, but I saw a screenshot from Unreal2 where it had a scope and crosshair showing.

the crosshair was pretty basic, but the scope looked like modern art, had a great feel to it, organic and electronic.

something like that for the turrets I think would be perfect since they're ground based, and and electronic device.

I'll see if I can find the pic

just my $0.02

The scope you're talking about is the one on the sniper rifle I assume(as thats the only weapon with a scope in that game as far as I know of.) its all orange , with a big circle in the middle.
Imo that would make a great hud , you could even have the big circle in the middle jump to , and follow the nearest player when they enter your line of sight.

some other ideas , are a scope that has a magnified middle area , or a scope that simulates looking through the barrel of the gun...

personally I like Jedi's Idea quite a bit...as long as it has a magnified center...

EDIT:oh wait... you got a pic of it up hee hee

I remade the scope in the picture, just a quick job for now to get an idea of how it might look in the game.

I have it made in peices as a psd and it could be edited even more if needed.

here's what I came up with:

We can use that type of theme, but any other info you want on that hud:

Weapons, ammo, status, current targets, owner info, Time, ect? And if so where does that go? One the sides?

I'd say yes, others may disagree, but with the display above it would clutter the screen to have in the viewport area, however there's plenty of room to the left and right of it. kinda like the LG recharge indicator. as long as the info wasn't incredibly tiny, it would only take a quick glance to check your stats and read the info.

to further simplify things, dividing the information, say half on the right, half on the left, will alow you to quickly see the figures you want without reading thru it all.

also that screen I posted has the "scope" smaller than the screen, it could be increased to just fit the screen, or maybe even partially cut off the outer edges at the top and bottom to improve the viewing area slightly.

those details are minor IMO so long as I can see what I'm aiming at and have a kewl looking scope at the same time. If epic had allowed for a larger custom crosshair texture, I'd be using the center portion of that crosshair already ;)

I updated the screenshot above to include the status text, I also did some minor adjustments to the size and look of the decal to allow for more viewing area.

I guess both ammo amounts could be shown, plus which ammo type is currently selected. But we could do that simply by highlighting one of them, changing text color or something.

I agree that Unreal2 pic looks nice, but IMO, just as we don't want to be too similar to the xloc cam, we also shouldn't be too similar to the Unreal2 scope.

Nice to use as an idea, but I'm still hoping one of these graphically-enhanced team members would come up with something that when you see it, you won't feel that you have already seen it.

well I'm not a graphically enhanced team member, but I whipped up an original concept, it's nothing special but it is something not seen in another game.

I like it!

One suggestion.. just to see how it turns out: put some circles around the main field in the grid area. Sorta like lens-lines
