That still could get us into trouble.
The last time I talked to jb about stuff that still needs to be modeled, new melee weapons were on the list. So I guess you will get some new weapons sooner or later.
But Pepito was 100% right about the ownership issue - we agreed upon not re-creating any designs from movies, games or whatever.
And for the staffs and spears thing: These weapons require a new set of animations each. I am not saying that they won't be done, but doing the anims is quite some work...

The melee systems works by bones (ref points) placed inside he weapon. the weapons them selves dont use any real collision in order to save frame rate. What we do is we trace from each bone during the swing and see if any thing cross a path between the bones. If it does, it checks to see if its a player, solid object or another melee weapon then does "something" based off that check.
So the weapons have have this in mind. A long weapon (pike, halabeard) would need a bone in the base of the weapon so we dont swing through stuff.
For use we want to add something new. Would another sword work? Hmmm got "3" of them arlready...two axes, 2 blunt objects...looking for something else...new...different.
Now maybe we should allow for a custom melee weapon meaning weapons that you can get and try your self...hmmmm that would be kind of cool.
That sounds like a cool idea...
Ill model some weapons... and send them to whoever wants them for the mod.
The Yard Stick sounds like a good idea though.
What I would like to see is a Scimitar with a Khopesh combo, like the dual daggers. Would be perfect for the Egyptian models. But I've been lobbying for that for a while. The only other weapon I'd like to see would be an energy-whip, but I know we can't do flexible weapons because of engine limitations.

Instead of the primary-attack, secondary-block thing, how about making it so that Primary fire does horizontal attacks and Secondary fire makes vertical attacks? Holding down the primary fire button would make you block horizontal attacks, and holding down secondary would make you block vertical attacks. Blocking wouldn't be a 1 or 2 second animation, but a sort of stance that stays until you release the primary or secondary button and stop blocking.

hehe that reminds me of a suggestion I made a whiiile back when they where making the first version of duel .... in fact thats almost exaclty what I had in mind.
That and the custom melee weapons thing.. anyway if all that's possible now i'd say go for it! (talking about the custom melee weapon thing).

If you're talking about the crazy lunge things people do online, you crouch, then jump-attack.
Would be nice to see a flail (ball and chain) and some sort of spear/polearm, like a trident or something since there are pretty much every other kind of older weapon in. Both the flail and spear would be good for long range, but not as accurate/quick as the current weapons.

thats what I thought of. except it can be also used in all gametypes. in a normal gametype like ONS you could just hold it like it was a heavy duty rapier. pri: stab and alt:shield. but to make it more worthwhile in duel mode you could have it have the animations plus its block would be like a small twirl. En guarde!

can't do the ball and chain. unless its in the form of a gun. suggested something like that earlier on.
