I had this problem too.
To fix it, I had to install UT2004 in another directory and then install all of the bonus packs and Chaos UT2 into that directory. It worked fine after that (except all of the other bugs, of course).
I called my new directory "Happy Fun UT2004"

i installed in C:/UT2004,if its based on install locations...

I don't think it has anything to do with location...
I had a few errors as well and when I finally did get the game to start from the Chaos shortcut it started in normal boring old unreal menu instead of the Chaos menu. Fixed it by reinstalling the game, in the same directory, applied the required patch, then installed Chaos (zip version), then played. The directory I installed it was not the default C:\UT2004 but D:\Games\UT2004.
In short the easiest way to fix it imo is to patch to required version then install Chaos on a fresh install...

I would rather wait then go through the pain of re-installing everything...

Hopefully the problem will be fixed on the next version.

this is really annoying... i don't know what went wrong b/c i re-installed unreal tournament in F:\Unreal Tournament 2004 and now whenever I open any umod file, it opens up setup and tells me to update. but I already updated my version!
UPDATE: I don't know if any umod files work... :/ BUT i installed chaos by extracting the zip file and making sure all the files were there and now it works

(i reinstalled ut04, so you might have to also, but maybe not)

I take it by updating you installed the 3204 patch? If so double check it again.
If that still doesnt work, one workaround ( i had a similar problem with multiple installs) is to grab UMod Browser and extract it that way.

I dont know if Im helping at all but does your target location read as the following:
C:\UT2004\System\UT2004.exe -mod="ChaosUT2"

This is what it is...
C:\UT2004\System\UT2004.exe -MOD=ChaosUT2
And just so you know how much I have (and would have to re-install):
My UT2004 folder has 9.24GB of stuff....

I re-installed over everything and I tried to start CUT2 Evolution. Heres what I got.
UT2004 Build UT2004_Build_[2004-03-03_02.42]
OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
CPU: GenuineIntel Unknown processor @ 2603 MHz with 255MB RAM

General protection fault!

Then I deleted the inis and then I got this.

Then I deleyted the inis and got this-
UT2004 Build UT2004_Build_[2004-03-03_02.42]
OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)

I think its fixed but I am missing that file. Anyone know?

it does not look like you applied the UT2004 Patch yet. Remember remove the chaosut2.in's before you play
