Not the Worlds first. Planetside was an MMOFPS. but planetside was pretty dodgy.

Dear goddess, you do realise what this means, don't you? With the release of X-ray, UE3 and Spore in quick succession, it's no longer going to be about who developed the game - it will be about what engine they used, even moreso than now. and it will onlt get worse when Carmack/iD pull their collective finger out and start licencing D3.5 to devs. Or release Wolfenstein 4D
And then, there's the ultimate in vapourware - Duke Nukem: (in development) Forever - an engine so powerful and versatile that it bypasses the PC completely and runs directly in its own partition in the human imagination...

Well, as long as I get my dose of ninja action, it's all good. I'm hoping UE3 adds cool things like BSP that can get chunks blown out of it, like what I believe DNF has... that would be insanely cool...

Playing red faction on line with its geomod tech was a heck of a lot of fun. Made CTF maps intresting to play as during the game, your routes could and would change depending who blasted a hole into which wall....fun stuff there :)

I remember turning on cheats and tunelling through red faction levels.

And soon the New Earth Government will legalise no-holds-barred-fighting to prevent violence in the mining colonies and the tournament will be born...

good point. still, even if ue3 doesnt have geomod, normal mapped decals are gonna look way awesome. maybe a geomod system where you specify a maximum weapon scarring depth? so that you could blow the corners off walls but not make a hole all the way through. but actually, now that I think about it, normal mapped decals with a debris particle effect would work perfectly for flat surfaces, and maybe even slightly concave ones. it's the convex corners that would need somthing else...

I decided to start posting unreal engine news here just for the heck of it. UE3 has licenced SpeedTree! SpeedTree is middleware for generating and rendering trees. It is very fast and efficient, and it also takes care of wind effects and LOD transitions. For all you people who are not graphics geeks, that meens that the trees get less detailed as they move farther away, so that your video card doesn't have to work overtime to render detail that you can't see anyway.

Pretty Trees: one more reason why UE3 is t3h r0xx0r.

Nope, Epic has specifically announced that they are NOT making unreal 3 at the moment. I think midway might have recently gotten the liscence for it though. Also, I *think* i heard it slip that microsoft is using it for a game, and someone else is using it to make the world's first MMOFPS.

EDIT: Bioware is using it too, presumably for an rpg(but not neccicarily).
Steyr, your behind on UE3 information. If you are interested in UE3 you should go here:

Not really. I just dont pay too much attention to the liscensees. I swear I saw a press release saying that midway had obtained the rights to develop several unreal tournament titles and a new unreal game.... at least, I think it was to develop, though it may have been only to publish the titles... who knows. All I'm really interested in is what the engine can do and what it's capabilities are.

Just checked the midway website. Midway has rights to PUBLISH two future unreal tournament installments. Unreal apparently had nothing to do with it. And, um, I just realized it was anything but recent. :P

Oh, and by the way, I've already been there. I've also gone through the beyondunreal news archives looking for screens and news on UE3. I'm a UE3 addict. (baby)

ah speedtree, i couldnt remeber what it was called, but i did try to explain that a while ago....im looking forward to mking some vietnam style jungle hell levels....

(my first and possibly best ut map when i was a new mapper was junglehell, a ctf map set in a jungle, and quite possibly the only map in ut to ever feature rain. it was all done using sheets accross the level and looked cool as at the time....ah the good ole days....)

EDIT: i just looked up (last months?) pc gamer, and unreal 3 is sitting at number 4 on the most wanted chart. id presume there is going to be an unreal3. ive seen screens of it and everything. coooOOOOooo'al.
