First of all the whole Chaos Evo. looks awesome (the sniper rifle looks exceptionaly slick). Just recently (about a month ago) I reformated the two hard drives on my computer, but after installing everything back again I find I can't play pretty much any of my games. I run a Win98SE OS, Geforce2 32mb Vid card, ??? sound card, Duron 1.3GHz processor and 256mb SD ram. Every time I try to run UT2k3, Warcraft III, Mechwarrior 3&4, and Emperor of dune I get an error message telling me that either DirectX could not be initialized or that my current video configuration is not compatable with the game. This is what UT2k3 says when it crashes: UT2003 Build UT2003_Build_[2002-09-19_17.26]

OS: Windows 98 4.10 (Build: 67766446)
CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 1299 MHz with 255MB RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 (4403)

Error setting display mode: CreateDevice failed (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL). Please delete your UT2003.ini file.

History: UD3DRenderDevice::UnSetRes <- CreateDevice <- UD3DRenderDevice::SetRes <- UWindowsViewport::TryRenderDevice <- UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine

I have DirectX 8.1 (came with the WarIII CD), and I have tried playing the game with the latest patch (2199) and without, it comes up with the same error message. Just recently though Nvidia came out with their universal drivers which is supposed to be universal files that work with all versions of the GeForce cards, I'm thinking that the universal driver file is whats causing the problem, but it seems that Nvidia is having website difficulties and they don't seem to have any older versions of their drivers available.
P.S. Oh yea deleting the UT2003.ini file does nothing, the game creates a new one and this whole error message still comes up. Thanks for any help offered, I would really like to get back into UT2k3 so I can play Chaos Evo when it comes out.

Since you're not able to run most of your games, this propably is a general problem and has nothing to do with UT2k3. Make sure that you have the latest drivers for your mainboard & the latest detonators. If that doesn't solve the problem, maybe your installation of DirectX or even Windows is messed up.

Try installing the DirectX that came with UT2k3, it's 8.1b which is required for the game. You could also go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download DirectX 9.0a.

But most important for UT2k3: update it to v2225, the most recent patch.

Well, UT2k3 works perfectly under Win98SE and not everyone wants to spend several hundreds of dollars or euros for a new OS...

Sounds to me like a direct X issue... v9 should help it. Be sure you have all the win98se patches and updated BEFORE you install direct x 9. I have XP, but find win98se runs my game faster since I have a slower system, 1GHz.

i hate computer related bugs. i know nothing except how to mess with the registry, not to delete any of the system files (learned that the hard way) but since my dad is a computer programmer he usually gets stuff fixed pretty fast.

Yeah, registry mistakes truly suck. I do think they're right above, check all your drivers for your hardware. Update to at least the version of directX that comes with UT2003. Also check and make sure you have no conflicts in your Device Manager. And of course failing all that, you might want to see about getting professional help from a tech support store or website.
