Chaos as Gametype instead of mutator ?

Are there any plans to change it to a gametype as opposed to a mutator that way it would be easy to find all "Chaos" server no matter if they were running CTF, DM or KOTH in the server browser.
As people try to connect to my chaos server as it shows up under DM and then they get sucked off with the huge downloads that they get.

[SSB]Major_Wilson,
yes we can look into that in part. Also when they try to connect, is your server trying to download Chaos to them? Not sure what you ment by "huge download that they get".

yes it tries to download the entire chaos mod (as i have it compressed on my redirect webserver) the download works fine the only thing that doesnt get downloaded is chaos.ini (but as far as im aware this is serverside only use).
It just put people off the server if they have to download 30mb opf maps, meshes and textures etc
Even though the server is called "NEW CHAOS" server some people aint that intelligent to go and download the mod first, lol

If their will be new gamemodes (normal ones with simply the mtuator added), then can they have a ; in the start of the INI file? It would make it a pain for everyone else to have a list of new gamemodes that only add the mutator and not actually be new. Only the truely new gamemodes (like [Team]KOTH) should stay.

I second that , my gametype list is far too cluttered for a chaos version of DM , TDM , BR etc...

please keep all those server in mind, which are running mapvote or ut2vote. So it would be very nice, if there where only one .u file, or the possibility to define chaosut as gametype, so that no serverpackages are needed. Exessive works that way. With that kind of gametype, the needed packages are only downloaded, if that gametype starts, and not if another gametyp is running. it's always a pain, tah everyone has to download all those stuff, evan if he want's to play standart dm/ctf/whatever.

still 4 *.u files and no gametypes

there should be 3 gametypes in the current version. KOTH, team KOTH, and duel.
When we add in the new ones, i beleive the plan is to keep it limited to 4 u files. Basically the ChaosGames.u file contains mainly the gametype stuff, and the chaosut.u file contains basically everything done in the mutator. The other two u files are for the weapon spawning and the shortcut. With the exception of possibly the ChaosGames_UI file, though, they are interdependant. Also it would be hell to rearrange about 1000 files across 4 packages
With that said, even if we did put all the stuff into a gametype and made it a seperate u, that would only save maximum of about 1 meg of downloading, since most of the size is from the textures/models/etc and that is needed to run the mutator. Excessive, on the other hand, only adds in one new model and texture for the flamer (at least for weapon models), so there is not that much to download outside of the u files. Thats why their file is 3 megs and ours is over 60.

just to clear things:
i'm not complaining about the size.
the problem is:
we are running ffa servers with ut2vote (mapvote would be the same) which mostly run standard-gametypes. But we'd like to offer some mods too. The pain is, that every mutator needs to be added to the list of serverpackages, and that means, that is has to be downloaded, evan so, it is in the most cases not running!
now with excessive i configured ut2vote that way, that it runs without the serverpackages. it's not a secret, but most admins don't know, that a gametype loads it's needed package on it's own, if started, but afaik, it only does this for one *.u-package.
with the new excessive 2.1 it runs perfect. No serverpackages, so if excessive isn't running, there will be no download. If excessive is started via ut2vote, it pushes all the needed things to the clients. PERFECT!
every mod should work taht way... The funny thing is, that evan madnad didn't know about this advantage of a gametype
so maybe this is a reason to think about gametypes with only one u-file, and offering the gametypes in a seperate u- and int-file for not confusing those admins, still working with that crappy webadmin

I think I now know a bit better what your talking about. However atm not sure what the "fix" is for you. We can try to look for a work around.

No no no. The serverpackage is in their so clients connected to the server see the content, even if they have the content.
Me and my brother always use to get this with Matrixmoves and lazymatrix for the first UT - I now know the way to resolve this would have the serverpackage line in the server's .ini file.

a chaos spinoff of assualt could be nice.. for ut2k4... you can call it chaotic siege or something. 2 teams one attacking one defending.... team one has to seize the enemy castle/stronghold/whatever the defending team could set up traps or little forts or something.
One player on the defending/attacking team would be the king and the main object is to kill the king and sieze the castle/stronghold/whatever. you could have seige units that could be used to ram the lower entrance of the defending castle (of course the lower entrance of the castle would have defenses) then again the attackers would probably just have to grapple over it.
The mappers for chaos could have some real fun with that, since they can import uscript into maps. They would be able to make all kinds of indoor out door traps or something. (like that egypt based map amunra... which had a bunch of traps all over the place)

Sounds like a cross between Assault and Hunted...
Right now I think we're going to wait until UT2k4 before we start working on any assault-like gametypes. We really need to see what Epic does with it before we can have an idea about what we should do with it.
