MOD's or Joke

On Sunday 8/17/03

I tried out a few MODs for UT2003,
One was Troopers and the other one was Unreal Speed.

I could not believe how bad they both are!

1. Troopers, from what I saw of the first ten minutes of playing around with the mod. It only has 4 weapons (2 for each side). If there were more I would not know due to the lack of wanting to play it anymore (deleted from system).

2. Unreal Speed, this one was cool at first till I started seeing how dumb the AI drives. They ran off the road more then I did! Plus when you ran out of ammo, that was it unless you killed yourself. Also, being able to leave the car seemed pointless. How in the world can someone stop a car in there using an AR when the car’s life is somewhere around 800+ HP. So after about 20 minutes of BS (deleted from system)

This brings me to Chaos.
This so far is the only mod I have ran across that adds enjoyment to UT2003.
It has not taken away from the game like the other 2 mods.
And has for the other ones I’ve seen, if jungle warfare is what I wanted to play then I will fire up SOF II Double Helix for that action or Ghost recon.
If it WW II action I want then it would be MOHAA or even better BF1942 (using UT engine).

So in closing all I can say is Chaos UT2003 ((((ROCKS!!!))))

heh couldnt agree more. I had an early beta of unreal speed which put me straight off it after my 9700 was reduced to 5fps on very low details also the handling was horrible. Maybe this has been improved but first impressions count.
I do give credit to all these mod makers tho cos I cant even make a ig gun let alone a hole mod

Well thats the danger when you look at mods that are not done yet. I would imagine that with Troopers they were rushed to meet the deadline of Phase1 of the MSU contest. That does not allow for the best design case. Give them some time. And US, I like those guys. Their coder was kind enough to show me how to do scripted textures and with out his help, the tombstone stuff would not have happened.

Troopers and Speed both have enormous potential. At thier current stage, they are clumsy, incomplete, and lacking.

Troopers needs a ton more weapons, much more balance, and they should probably do some work on the aiming characteristics (for some reason, it just doesn't feel "right"...)

Speed would be great if there were some good pickups. For instance, the ability to get out of the vehicle would be a great way to grab powerups. Like pitstops or something, you get out and grab the powerup. It either fixes your car, or gives you ammo or something. Maybe a class-based system would benefit it too. Certain character classes may improve certain aspects of your vehicle, plus give you a loadout of weapons when you're on foot. Like one class might have a toolkit so they can fix thier car, another one might have an ammo teleporter, so they can teleport ammo straight to thier car (hop out, "shoot" the car with it, and your ammo refills slowly). A heavy weapons class could choose a fast car, get ahead of the competion, park, hop out and then try to frag all thier opponents with anti-vehicular weapons. It would be cool if you could hop out of your car if it was badly damaged and use a sniper rifle or something to shoot an enemy driver out of his car, then jump in and drive off with it...

Of course, by the time any of these other projects get to be good enough to be appreciated, they'll be eating our dust. Chaos is getting pretty awesome, especially with all the great new ideas I've been seeing lately.

There Is only one mod I know of that can touch Cut2 IMO. And that mod is Faceoff. Faceoff is the only mod that I have seen that comes close to being as fun as Cut2 , but in the end , Cut2's compatibility , and fammiliar feel wins out. although faceoff IS definately this mods greatest enemy when it comes to the MSU contest. But Faceoff doesnt offer the potential for creativity that this mod offers.(plus Cut2 has friendlier forums :) )

Whats most impressive though , is that faceoff is all done by a single person.

anyway , theyre two different mods with two different styles. no sense in comparing them.

Thanks guys!

I agree most with Ice about the part about, if I wanted a WW2 game, I would have bought one, if I wanted a racing game, I'd have bought one.

That's one of the many reasons I love Chaos so much. Because I liked UT, and because I like UT2003. I did not want a dif game when I get a mod.

I liked Carry the Flag in UT for example, changed the rules in a good way, but still it was ChaosUT. And Strangelove was excellent. Same deal applies, neat new way to use the 'deemer, but still basicaly the same game.

Haven't played those UT2 mods BTW, can't comment there.

Anyway, thanks.

R, apparently you're not the only one who is into Carry the Flag. My CUT2 Carry the Flag server is getting all kinds of clients! I see new faces every day and they like the variation enough to come back :) Heck, I even have FurrySound half hooked on it. Excellent combination of a great mod and a great variation on a cool gametype.

I usualy stay away from threads like this one but, I havnt seen any one say what i though needed to be said. So, here goes:

At the risk of sounding all happy go lucky, Why so much negativity? I mean to be honest, the people who made those mods put hours and hours of work into them. They sacrificed time with their familys, sleep, and poured their lifes blood into their mod. To have some one come along and simply say" thats sucks" is verry frustrating. Not to mention disheartning. To be honest, If some one came along and said that to me, well....... I would put them on the ignore list with a quickness. ;)

I would like to offer an alternitive. How about keeping comments on the positive side. Why not try to offer somthing constructive. For instance:

Troopers, player models use their own custom ragdoll. ( for those of you that dont know: the rag doll is what you see when you die that uses the Karma Physics) Now one of the flaws that i happent to notice was that their modeler either does not know how to, or did not have time to properly set up the ragdolls. ( this can be seen by the way the models limbs and head twist in an unnatural way) . Does this mean that he sucks? hell no! look at those models. they look great. this just means what i stated above, he either didnt have time or doesnt know how. Either way it can be fixed ;) <wonders if their modelers know about this bug>

To be honest, I was looking forward to Troopers more then any other mod( I get to play Chaos as its built ;)) and yes, i felt a bit let down, by not only the lack of game content, but some actions that were taken by members of that team.

One thing i seemed to notice about the mods that were released for the contest. Most of them seem to have focused mainly on their Huds and menus, and not so much game play content. We always seem to do things backwards, and focus on the game play first and menus and huds secondly. Silly us. ;)

On the CTF note...... Waite till they get a load of Chaos CTF. 8O

yeah, I don't see any reason to flame the other mods yet. they are still in BETAs and stuff.

But personally I don't like the guns in Troopers. They don't fire right. the weapons fire too slow and the projectiles are waaaaay too slow. and the bots are too l33t witht he guns :([/list]

This is true that the other mods by all means should not be slammed.
I got spoiled with Chaos for the simple fact that it worked well right from the time I used it.

Plus it did not take from UT2003, it offered more ways to kill and brought me back into enjoying the game.

I know a lot of work went into the other mods, and that for the most part they are in beta form. And at the time the post was made I was not too happy (not a good reason but the only one for me that is true) If the brain would have been working more the post would only say LONG LIVE CHAOS!

and sorry for the slamming

Ice, No need to appoligise. Your openion is more then welcome here. ;) My intentions were not to chastise, but to present a diffrent angle on the conversation. I just thought " I know how i would feel if it were my work that was getting bad marks ( Iv gotten pretty bad marks on stuff before )." BUT, Lucky me!!! I get to work with the best, so my stuff looks better by Proxy( Pun intended)

On that same note, I was dumbfounded when Epic said we didnt have enough content to compete with the other mods. There was a minor misshap on our part, and the maps didnt get submitted, but I still think we had the content to compete.
