SquirrelZero made this cool realtime shadow code available for public use, and I thought that it might be able to be implemented into ChaosUT2 as a neat effect.

BTW, he says at the bottom that it's cool to use it so long as you tell him how you're using it, as he's interested in the ways it could be used.

I think we'll probably have to discuss the ethics/principles/issues of using the work of those outside the team again in dev but i would say there is a possibility we may decide to use it, since it seems an obvious improvement over the existing system.

It would make me a very happy meat byproduct if you did.

very nice effect.. have missed this in UT... though did you notice how as soon as your not in the radious of effect of the light, the shadow simply dissapears.?...strange to see it pop on and off

I'd love to see this included in Chaos, But we'd have to ask permission first, of course. 8)

Well, you don't really have to ask permission. All he wants is that you tell him what you're using it for.

And yes, those shadows are awesome! (up)

It works pretty well too. Here are 5 screen shots of it in action (but it looks soo much better as you move):

I am not 100% sure on the sunlight actor as the "major" shadow seems to be out of place all of the time. But the other one (minor) follows it very well. Meh maybe its just me :) It also does not show up with our melees but that can be fixed as well. Total time it took to add 5 minutes and fully network compliant too :)

BTW this is not a statement that we will use this code. I just tried it out to see how it works.

Hehe, well, that doesn't sound very "real" to me.

Yeah, I clicked on those pics, and it looks more like a bug than anything else in a couple of them. Or, as in a few of the other pics, there's not really anything there worthwhile to notice.

I dunno, but based on what I've read and seen here, I'd say an improved version of this would be nice to see in a realism mod (I'm a fan of some realism too, like INF), where I'm sneaking around the shadows, having the time to notice and enjoy such a thing, but not so much worthwhile in anything else.

The shadows in UT2004 are fine IMO, and not usually the focus of attention either. Kinda busy fraggin to worry too much about those.

Yeah, but that extra hint of realism in a sci fi setting adds so much more to the aesthetic value of the game.

Well, it seems we're not really in crunch time anymore, so maybe we can afford to try implementing some little things like this. Especially if it's a 5 minute deal.
