UT2003 Demo Thoughts

Folks,

Just wanted to know what your thoughts of the demo are/were?

Here are mine:

1) Graphics, well not much to say here but OMG do they rock ;)

2) Gameplay - The first time I played it at Epic I though hmmm this feels a lot like Quake. I was not alone a lot of other peope (die hard UT fans) dont like the speed. ME, I am ok with it. It just did not feel like UT. I am sure moving the game speed down a notch or two will fix it for those that think its too fast. I love the double jump. I have been missing that since my Q2 days. I dont care much for the Aderline but can see how that replaces the Relics or something like that. However I see people using the dodging quite a bit on-line and at first that seem a bit spammy to me... Bombing run was kind of fun to play.

3) Weapons. Mixed bag. Some were ok, some were not ok. The mini-gun was a bit week IMHO. That sniper...some things to like and others to dis like. The RL needs to have a bit more splash damage as I really need to hit the gun dead on most of the time to do damage.

4) HUD - Gotta go. Did not like it at all.

5) AI - I did see some improvement. I was playing CTF and my team of bots got a nice big lead. With one minute left I saw all my bots pull back and play defense instead of trying to get another Cap. Cool. AI that thinks :)


Over all I kind of like it. Its a change from UT which may or may not be a good thing...

Hmmm lots to comment on, lots to take in and figure out where to use it.

Grafx: i was some what impressed here. The Karma P. are great! I think i jumped off the Citadel map 50 times just to see how i rolled down the hill. The particle system in this engine is astounding!! Unfortunatly, ya only get to see a touch of what its capable of in this demo. The textures look great. Those Pixel shaders are going to be a gift from the Gods!!!

Game Play: I didnt see anything all that diffrent from most FPS. I like the double jump alot! I also like the speed and ingame Physics. I think the Adrenline is too slow getting enough to activate for how long it lasts. Some of the guns are sweet, But some are a little weak. Havnt had a chance to see the link gun link, but other then that i like most of them. The biggest problem that i have with the game play is... No grapple! (We will fix that though.)

HUD: GOD THAT HUD BLOWS!!! (JB: allredy working on new ideas for a CUT2:E hud) Also that anouncer. I think i want to kill him. HAHA My wife said that he sounds like a Used Car Salesmen. He sounds like he should be on the X box not a PC game( JB: thinking of how we can replace theese also).

Maps: Nice Maps for the most part. THey dont use 1/2 of the technology that is there. the outdoor DM map is pretty cool. Verry Small for an outdoor map, but atleast ya get the idea of what they will look like.
The indoor DM map is weak. That secret area made me cringe. Howbout a door with a hidden switch? Anything is better then a nonsolid poly!! The one redeming Quality that i can find in this map is the animated Engine Meshes.
The CTF map is beautiful. It looks amazing!! LOTS of room for improvment on the layout.
I havnt playd the Bombing Run map yet. ( will update when i do)

All and all, I also like it. It will be a whole lot better when it has Chaos in it :wink:

I like the new speed, I like the new rocket launcher and I like the new killing sprees and mulit kill messages, hehe. :mrgreen:

After Godlike you get a Wicked Sick

And the multi kills:
2 Kills = Double Kill
3 Kills = Multikill
4 Kills = Megakill
5 Kills = Ultrakill
6 Kills = Monsterkill
7 Kills = Ludicrous Kill
8 Kills = HOLY SH*T!!! (LoQ, when the announcer says this, you want to merry him immediatly, hehe ;))

And when get 15 frags in a row with the new Flak you are called a "Flak Monkey", damn I like this stuff... :D :twisted:

I've been way to busy to play with it much. I really need to do some reading to figure out some of the new stuff.

- I did not like the delay on the rail gun. It takes way too long to get going. As a matter of fact I did not care for most of the new weapons.

- Graphics are pretty awesome.

- I really like the new physics. Its funny watching yourself flopping around when you get fragged.

- It is in serious need of a Chaos injection.

I hope to have more time to play with it this weekend.

It's an excellent game.

The xloc is better now, and I am really enjoying hearing the old tele-whores crying.

The HUD is less offensive to me now after shrinking it, and ditching the weapon display. But the radar in CTF is lame IMO, and bugged for a fact. When you reduce the size of your HUD, the 'radar' stays the same, and now the dots go way below where the HUD display is. I vote ditch the radar.

One thing I would recommend Epic or Chaos do right away is remove the ability to keep your adrenaline after you are fragged. This makes no sense to me. You get blown to bits, and you can still respawn with all your adrenaline? That ain't right.

I think it's WAY too early to talk about balancing weapons. I myself have not totally gotten used to them yet, so I wouldn't suggest anything. My guess is nobody here has mastered them enough to say one is bad or another is good. Give it time. Plus, they have already released a patch which changed them some. Most noticable was the mini. It's better now than 1st release.

Give it time.

My impression is that the game overall is requiring more skill. This is a good thing.

And we don't need a weapon like was being discussed, which shoots bullets (or shells) and grenades. It's already in the game.

Well I had a little more time to play and I must say this game is growing on me fast.

- The graphics are outstanding!!!
- Gibs are awesome.
- The combo shot with the sniper gun is simply fantastic.
- The pistol seems a bit weak to me. You don't stand much of a chance until you find another weapon.
- The lightning gun is very hard to hit moving targets with and takes too long to recharge. (Gotta remember to move its priority down)
- I do agree that the announcer has got to go. Very lame.

- It still needs a shot of Chaos :D

here's a copy of a thread from INA:
We're well aware of the fact that some of you guys dislike the sports announcer. :-)

As a result of this feedback, there will be 3 options in the final game:

-No announcer voices
-Only "reward" voices (i.e. headshot, double kill, etc...)
-Full announcer (headshot, flag taken, etc...)

In the meantime, in your USER.INI file you can change:

bPlayAnnouncer=True

to

bPlayAnnouncer=False

To disable the voice.

All announcer threads from here on out will be closed.

The graphics are unbelievable.... I almost cried when I first loaded Antilus :D The Music/Sounds are cool, true the sports announcer is cheesy, but from what I hear you can turn him off in the full version. I really like the explosive-black-hole-death-from-beyond sound for the shock rifle combo! I do concur that the HUD needs to be revamped. I miss the translucency effect the old one had. As for the weapons, I kinda' agree with R.Flagg, that it will take some time to get used to them. (although I miss the classic Mini Gun :( ) I don’t know if other people are having problems with this but does this sound like a bad suggestion? How about quick keys for the adrenaline moves? Either way, I’ve been away from the demo for more than ten minutes so I must get back to it...... 8)

i like it the shock rifle is not dominant now (which is a good thing) the flak is now the most dominant weapon (which is also good for me) didn't like the ctf level tho also no double domination surly one map is not a lot mayber add a minute or two to the download time :wink:
