I don't know how hard the devs are trying, but the Generals have had many major attempts.

They won't work without major publizing from the devs. Mostly what I'm talking about is NEWS creation. Bold headlines that declares major things related to duel. For the past 3 months now, all Chaos related headlines are pretty much limited to things like the hoverboard, relics, expanded selection of weapons, GUI changes, bug fixing, etc. It makes Chaos seem to not include duel.

Maybe some new headlines would help... Just me 2 cents...

the next update should fix some of that as its mainly Duel/HH related. That and we 'gots us a dedicated melee boy' now :)

Duel itsself is pretty close to complete. I mean as far as i know We intend to add 2 man team duels, but as a whole duel itsself is complete. There are tweaks and bug fixes needed, but nothing too major to add to it.

I think part of the problem that we seem to be having is that People seem to confuse the melee system with Duel. Melee weapons are available in almost all of the Chaos Game types. Duel is only one of them. For instance ChaosDM has the ability to play in melee only mode, and in the normal mode it has both melee and guns. Chaos CTF will be the biggy :) It will have everything in it, From melee weapons to vehicles. Ofcourse we are in the process of doing these things :)

So, for instance we are in the process of adding 2 new melee weapons and one new gun. They are all related to Duel in the way that they are chaos weapons and a server admin has the option to use any Chaos weapon, any melee weapon and any Unreal Tournament weapon. But, as you can see they are not directly Duel upgrades, so we would not list them as Duel upgrqades. We would list them as new weapons.

Why have there not been new melee weapons till now?
Thats simple. The melee system's work flow is about 10% code and 90% modeling and animation. Our initial set of melee weapons required about 300 animations. I created about 80% of those animations and the ones that i did not create i had to tweak and inport. So, inessance i spent months working on nothing but animations. As you can imagin after that i was pretty burned out on animating. So i wanted to spend some time working on something else. Vehicels was what i chose to work on next. they are about 10% modeling and about 90% code. Now that those are prettymuch done on my end i am back to the melee for a bit.

Currently, we are working on a media announcment to drum up some intrest in what we are working on. :) one of the problems that we have had in the past is that the site that was our home was on the decline in staff. The new staff of that Nameless site apparently felt that we are not news worthy enough to cover, so we are moving on.

We also have had a shift in the team itsself. I have beecome the lead modeler instead of the lead mapper. I dont think i have done a map since the 2nd release of CUT2. As the Lead modeler I am in the process of attempting to add a few really talented people to the team. So things are on the incline when it appears that they are on the decline. We noticed the issues that we have had in the past and are all redy taking steps to correct them :) Unfortunalty, it takes a bit to get them out from behind the wizards curtain and to the public.

Please bear with us, some really cool things are on their way.

IDEA:

Duel should have an option to let players vote on which weapons they fight with in the next round (all Melee, Sniper only, Crossbow only, Bastard sword only, etc.). Sniper/crossbow duels are a hell of a lot of fun, especially in large maps like Duel-Henge or Duel-RockGarden. I want others to be able to try it without having to resort to admin commands.

Not a bad idea actually. We should consider this one as it seems to be a very simple code addition. Hell, I daresay even I could code that.

Don't forget there is still team duel that could be done. And Rythmix already had an idea for a few tweaks :)

Thank you for the info LoQ.

However, I think that most of us do understand the difference between melee and duel. And just as often as not, I play with crossbows at slowmo at Duel-Branwen. :D

Melee simply doesn't work in DM, KOTH, or HH.

The prime reason is the lack of good (fitting) maps. Now, we don't have permission really to turn Branwen into a DM map, but the fast pace gametype of DM doesn't fit with the slower melee. I hope you understand.

There's a whole culture that's developed around Duel. Duel is more of a 1v1 fight, often with accompanyed by a sparring of wits or at least bragging. Duel means more than frags. It challenges people intellectually and sprititually.

I probably make no sense. But that's how I feel.

If melee is to work in other gametypes, there has to be specific maps designed for it. But it'll never replace duel as "the game type".

And oh yeah, slowmo has to go with crossbow duels, otherwise it's more of a DM thing than duel. Duel is all about slowness... At least that's what it is to me...
