Unreal Engine 3

Post by Steyr »

So, what do you think about it? If you are a poor, deprived child who has not seen Unreal Engine 3 in action, here's a few links for you:

Official site and high resolution screenshots
1 OK quality video on fileplanet(The encoding just doesn't do the engine justice)
4 More slightly ugly Videos on 1up.com(although again thats just the video encoder's fault)

There's also a ton of interviews and whatnot that you can find on the web. I've read them all. I personally think this makes doom 3 look like doom 1. I mean, the graphics are way better than the best of whats out there right now, including doom 3, half life 2, and all those things. And on top of that Unreal Engine 3 has seamless level loading, allowing for worlds nearly unlimited in size with no loading times after the first load, as well as Kismet, which is a mapper's dream. The only thing that I do not find totally awesome is that none of the screenies have Anti Aliasing on. But that's probably just an "Oops, forgot to set it in the video properties" kinda thing. The first game for the engine is scheduled to come out in 2006. If anyone wants to camp out by the store with me when it comes out, I live in North Carolina :P

Erm... sorry if this sounds dumb, but what game is the U3 engine for?

not nessecerily (sp?),

from what ive read it still uses a similar(or same even) level editor so hopefully that means that the code and other stuff might be similar.....but maybe just more complicated? maybe it will be like the transition from ut99 to ut2003...

one thing im looking forward to is the incorporation of the new decolayer type random tree/foliage generator. this randomly generates thousands of trees from only a few different meshes, and generates foliage completely randomly, which fades out like decolayers to aid performance. most excellent idea.

EDIT - ive also heard rumours of an unreal3 game. hence new engine name. dunno if this has been axed since u2 was given mixed reveiws...hope not , unreal1+2 were great

Spore? What's Spore? I looked at S.T.A.L.K.E.R's X-Ray engine, and it's the first engine i've seen that looks like it can compete with UE3. The toolset and kismet will probably be the deciding factor, along with the AI. X-Ray's AI sounds a little bit more versitile for games that aren't all about combat. Of course, you also have to take the release date into account... I wonder if you can use animation blending with ragdolls? That would be friggin awesome. Havok had a zombie demo way back when that showed zombies getting shot up by a character and blending their animations with ragdoll effects to make it look like they were actually getting hit and could feel it. It would also make a cool dying effect, I remember how even though the deaths in halo weren't ragdoll, they looked way better than plain old limp rag corpses, it would be cool to use blending to get the best of both worlds. Man, I'm gonna get a new computer for all this stuff. I dont think my radeon 9100 and amd 32-bit 1.8 ghz processor are gonna do it...

The Xray engine and the UE3 engine are in totally different leagues. The Xray engine is sure going to dominate (assuming that stalker is good enough to back it up. Good graphics do not a good game make. take D3 for example) but It's only going to be on top until we start seeing UE3 powered games. Ue3 seems capable of Alot more than Xray.

Spore?

Personally Im really getting hyped about Black and white 2 and Splinter cell3 more than any of those upcoming First person shooters.

Um, isn't splinter cell 3 already out? I swear I played the demo... I also saw a review in my latest game informer... Oh, and btw, Splinter cell is on Unreal Engine 2 :P

EDIT: Or 2.5, i'm not 100% sure

Sorry I should have stated that I was talking from the code end only. But yes ever code file created for chaosUT2 was written from the ground up new :)

Demos and Reviews can come out before the game. Editor houses get advance copies. and A good demo can increase launch sales dramatically.
Im pretty sure its not out yet.

Nope, Epic has specifically announced that they are NOT making unreal 3 at the moment. I think midway might have recently gotten the liscence for it though. Also, I *think* i heard it slip that microsoft is using it for a game, and someone else is using it to make the world's first MMOFPS.

EDIT: Bioware is using it too, presumably for an rpg(but not neccicarily).
