[resolved] Can't use melee - game crashes

I'd like to add that while I get the same error as the two guys above, more or less, that I can use Chaos as a mutator; but the game crashes if any screen using the Melee weapons is accessed, or any action is taken which would require accessing Chaos melee weapons, such as using the mutator configuration screen or loading via the -mod extension.

I opened the packages concerned in UEd, and all the rest of the sounds / texs e.t.c. are there, except those flagged in the log file...

@R.Flagg: Yeah, I know that it's not required, nor courteous or advisable, to modify the packages themselves (Version mismatch error results anyway.) That was just to show that the packages themselves are present, just "appear" to be incomplete: I extracted one of the offending packages on it's own, straight out of the zip, and it has those sounds "missing" in the Sounds list no matter when or how it is extracted.

Latest patch+ECE here. Tried the UMOD 3.6 => 3.7 patch which produced this error. Uninstalled (removed) Chaos and then used the Chaos full zip 3.7, which did the same thing. All Chaos related files were removed as per the readme before I reinstalled. Problem still persists, though.

Sorry, I hope this is cool. I split up the 3 folks who were in one thread, so I (maybe we) could help each other better.

At first I would have suggested this was the end of it, since there is no patch for the ECE version. However you then go on to mention that you used the full zip version.

Is there any chance the files were not placed correctly when installing the zip? Chaos has it's own folder inside of UT2004, etc... ?

Nope, the files are all in the right dirs.

C:\UT2004\ChaosUT2 I think it is.

what was the size of the file you installed it from?

only way those could be missing is a faulty installation

Size of the CUT Full 3.7 ZIP is given by Windoze as:

303 MB (318,259,200 bytes)

By chance did you install the zip without replacing existing files... ie, those that already existed were not overwritten?

The Chaos_DoCSounds.uax file should be located in UT2004\ChaosUT2\Sounds and is 19,256,928 bytes. Verify?

Verified. It's in C:\UT2004\ChaosUT2\Sounds and is 18.3 MB (19,256,928 bytes). I deleted all Chaos files prior to the (clean) installation of the latest full CUT version.

And you're still getting:
Warning: Missing Sound Sound Chaos_DoCSounds.Skel_die5
in the logs?

Might be on a wild goose chase here. I found this in my ChaosUT2.txt:

Log: The file '../System/LLSskinpack.upl' contains unrecognizable data
Critical: CheckTag
Critical: LoadSummary
Critical: ULinkerLoad::ULinkerLoad
Warning: Failed to load 'LLSskinpack'
(</log>)

Had never noticed that in "UT2004.txt" which was the log I'd been referring to before for CUT load messages.

The comment that was made (by jb I think) in another thread was true: it was this file which was preventing CUT from loading, apparently. It loads now, I'm just testing the gametypes. Thanks for your support.

Edit: Everything appears to work. As I said, never noticed this before. Sorry for wasting your time.

Azarael,

just to clarify that it was able to work 100% ok for you now? Just we have a few that are in the same boat as you and we have not seen this issue on our PCs so wanted to verify that is 100% working so we can use that as a data point to help those other users. Thanks and sorry again for your time and trouble!

Yeah, everything's working. It seems that Chaos doesn't like it when a file it doesn't recognise/that is corrupted is loaded by the engine.

Thanks for the verification...we had seen that before...not wonder if thats also not the cuase of some of the other simular errors...

Glad its working for you!

Good deal.

Not sure if you've already been, but there are guys around who can/would give you a good melee match online. You can often catch General_Sun in our IRC channel for example. As good a place to start as any.

Hope to see you online.
