Well, this is looking good for melee. We've already got a nice variety of players, at least one person favoring one particular kind of weapon. I think we should go with a chainsaw. I think it would be slower in combat than the other weapons, but do the most damage, its range should also be somewhat short. Would be good for cutting through someone's shield... Perhaps we could make it so that with a prolonged hit, you can deal damage through someone's shield, without having to drain the shield first. The other weapons would be faster but would have to cut through the shield first. Sword should have fast, effective moves, but not as powerful as axe or chainsaw, and have medium range, with defensive moves equivalent to offensive moves. Axe should have the longest range, but be only slightly faster than the chainsaw, and do damage about halfway between chainsaw and sword, and its defensive moves should be just about equivalent to offense (with offense being a little higher). Claw2 should be short range, only about as much as the chainsaw, but as fast as the sword and have equivalent damage to the axe. Claw2 should have no defensive moves, neither should the chainsaw for that matter.

This sounds about balanced... Though at this point, this is all probably moot since we haven't started developing the melee system yet.

Giving perfect melee weapon balance will be hard, but it can be done. I'm kind of confused on how the chainsaw will be slow, because of the way the blade moves or are you talking slow to start up and stop or maybe even the swap from the alt fire of UT's Chainsaw? Speaking of that chainsaw, it always gets a headshot no matter where you aim. Is it possible to make a melee arena mutator that only allow the four melee weapons?

I love chainsaw melees as much as the next guy but how about this for an alternative to the saw...

When I said the chainsaw should be slow, I meant its moves would be slow. That is, when you swing, it would take you longer to recover into a controlled stance than it would with other weapons. It's sort of the kind of thing you wanna jump in fast and take off thier head before they can react, and hope you hit, since you'll be vulnerable for a moment after you swing. We should also make sure we can modify the player's maximum movement speed when they are performing melee combat moves. You shouldn't be able to run away or dodge or jump away when you're in the process of swinging an axe, since you would need to rely on your footing in order to keep from falling down. A player could move, but only walking speed until the move completed. For melee combat, that should be enough.

Although, with speed adrenalin, one could overcome this limitation and be able to perform all kinds of crazy movements while swinging thier weapons. That would make speed much more useful in non-CTF gametypes.

hey , maybe the chainsaw/axe/sword could be capable of severing ppls grapples.

How's about a dedicated melee weapons mode? Kind of like Sword Arena was, but with all the aforementioned axes/drills/chainsaws/swords/ scythes (thought I'd throw that one in) Dunno how hard it would be to do, but it would certainly rock. And you could select one of the weapons to be a replacement for the Shield Gun in 'normal' Chaos UT2.

Melee Only + Medieval Mut + Spa's Ye Old Badass Armor + Invasion

Imagine two dudes in heavy platemail, beating back an army of Skaarj with a sword and an axe... Like one of those campy fantasy flicks...
