CUT2: News tab... annoying!

Post by DarkDragon »

I'm on dialup, and it's VERY annoying to have the news tab as the default tab that is selected whenever you access the settings menu for the mutator. If you could just move that tab over in the next release, that'd be great. Whenever I click on the CUT config button, it asks me to dial in, thus minimizing UT... which is VERY annoying.

Just goto Control Panel > Internet Properties > Connections > and select "Never dial a connection".

Then I have to make another icon on my desktop (which is already cramped full) to my internet connection, since it won't dial when I open IE.

Plus, I don't like to change my system configuration for a mod. If the news tab was just made something other than the default tab... that'd be great.. that way dialup users could just NOT click on it until they want the news.

I can see how that would be annoying, but DJ is right, it's a setting on your machine you choose to use or not, it's not Chaos. When I am offline, and start CUT2, I get a message in the news saying it was unable to connect.

You are not going to just see this with CUT2 on your computer, because it's not us. I suspect you will see it everytime you open anything that attempts to read some online URL.

DarkDragon,

what happens when you go to play an mulitplayer game like a lan game? does it try to connect to the net?

jb: Yes, it asks me to connect when I go to play online, the thing is, I NEVER play online... dialup is too slow.

The rest of you: *sigh* I don't see why it's so hard to move the news tab over one or two spaces for us dialup users. I don't want to change my system configuration for the reasons I listed... or if I did it the other way, by always changing that when I'm done playing UT, it'd be just as annoying.

But whatever, it's just a request, and I guess I can put up with it, as long as I have CUT2 configured I never have to click that button I suppose. I just don't see what the big deal is. Oh well. Thanks anyways. :\

I think you are missing the point.

It's a large mod, with lots in it. We are not going to start moving things around and recoding them, based on a personal preference you have set on your machine.

Again, the news tab is not forcing you to minimize and attempt to connect. That is your option, on your machine.

Sorry for your frustration, but you have the wrong angle on this.
why it's so hard to move the news tab over one or two spaces for us dialup users.
Making my point. I too am a dialup user. My system is not set to connect me everytime I open a HTML page or something offline. So, it is not a request 'for us dialup users'. It is a request to match your personal system settings.
I don't want to change my system configuration for the reasons I listed
That's fine, but it's your call. I don't want you to get frustrated with us, but I just think you are looking at this from the wrong angle.

I understand. But if you read my first post I said "in the next release of CUT2"... which meant the next major update/patch. *shrug* I guess I don't really care that much anymore... my problem with ammo swapping is more pressing to me. It's just an annoyance, and I thought it would be something you guys would be happy to change, as it isn't that big of thing to change, especially if it's just alongside another release of the mod.

I understand you guys have alot to do with this mod, and alot of requests. If you choose not to take this request, that's your choice.

Thanks for the replies anyways. But try to see it from my angle as well... my whole family would be driven insane if I were to change that option, as they expect to be able to simply double-click IE and have it connect to the internet automatically. Also, it would be a major pain in the butt for me to always go into the control panel and change this after every UT session...

But hey, whatever. I understand your reasons, and I hope you understand mine. And I'm not frustrated with you guys... I love your mod, and I'm trying to help it along for a percentage of the people playing it... and I'm sure I'm not the only one with this opinion. :)

What I have done, is created an icon right next to the IE icon, taht looks like a little phone, and I use it to connect to the internet.

Then I click on my IE icon. This way, I control when I get on the net, and no programs I start up will do it when I don't want them to.

I want you to not just like playing Chaos and coming here, but love playing Chaos and coming here. So sometime in next couple/few days, I am going to poke around(or maybe some tech head will reply here), and see if you can set the IE icon somehow to connect when you click it, but still not have our News tab (and everything else) do it as well.

Hang tight. And play online sometime. I play with a dialup, and sure I get fragged a lot, but it's still a blast. Stick a couple of our names in your buddies filter and jump in when we're on sometime.

My name ingame in UT2003 reads like this; RFlagg_MoO , so put that in your buddies list if you want, and find me sometime. We'll get on same team in CTF and have a go. 56K Defense! ( I like playing defense!)

Well it seems like you enjoy your 56k.. and I'm sure that's playable... but I have 28.8k at the very best. My connection remains completely unplayable. Thanks for the offer, but my character gets fragged 3 times before I even log in oftentimes... the lag is THAT bad.

If you had a software firewall, you could just set it to deny internet access to UT2k3. Then it would never even be able to initiate an internet link (and thus would not be able to call up the auto-dial prompt). With a connection like yours, you'll never be able to really play online anyway.

Plus, a firewall will protect your computer from all kinds of crap when online. I use ZoneAlarm and I love it. I can control what programs do what and when and how. Plus it gives me all kinds of options and info. It' a nice program and very user-friendly. Easy to use, even if you never heard of a firewall before.

I have ZoneAlarm, but I close windows and nearly everything else when I run UT2003, I only have 384mb of RAM (SD Ram at that)... and without closing things UT lags horribly.
