duel?

Post by chamalkan »

So, a gametype named duel.......
what are the specifics? it seems to me that it's not an one weapon only gametype for normal maps since you can achieve this with the Arena mutator.
I hope it's something like the Arena gametype in the Rune mission pack.
It's somewhat like RA. You spawn in a room where you pick up the weapons, then you move to the next room and there's a number placed on you in a ladder way. when it's your time you spawn in the arena and frag 8)
I think it's an improved version of RA. The mapper has control over what weapons you spawn with in the arena when he places them in the pick up room. I've also seen maps with weapon pickups in the arena. and unlike RA (at least in the last UT) mutators would work (well, perhaps some problems with random spawning mutators)

Yes, this is a question post mixed with a suggestion post ;)

Thanks for the questions and we need to hammer some of those details out. Original we needed a new gametype for our Melee Combat? Why? In order to get this system to work you need to use a different controller and pawn that you normally use in UT2k3 games. Out CUT Mutator can change to use our custom classes but its a very very bad idea to change pawns and controllers from a Mutator. Its one of the 7 deadly sins of programming UT2k3 :) Besides if we and other mutators did that, meaning replace the pawns/controllers (which some do, we do not), then you have confecting issues when you run more than one mutator at a time. And you can really mess things up. So in order to do melee proper, we had to have are own gametypes. Sure we can make a standard ChaosDM game type that is nothing more that plain DM with our controllers/pawn so we can use melee. But that's kind of a cheap hack. We do plan to add our own standard gametypes but only when we have something to make it worth while (like a slomo game winning kill shot, improved bot grapple, ect). And since a few of us are JK2 fans we thought about "Copying" their form of Duel. So for now it it will be something like that. Its a one on one combat with melee weapons. Win stays in, loser goes to end of line and the next person in line tries to beat the current winner. We thought to have a weapons screen so that users can select their melee weapons of choice. And the melees will all have some sort of trade offs (for example a great axe may do great damage, but it slows were as dual daggers are week but much faster).

Now with that said we could very easily morph it into something a bit more. We could have it so that we have a server side option were you can have melee weapons only, or all the standard weapons (like RA) or the chaos weapons (like RA chaos style), a single weapon (can be done by running arena mut) and maybe even the mapper. The mapper could set up the list of items that you can use. Imagine a sniper maps, you have two areas separated but a long pit of lava or something. One play spawns in each area. The mapper adds the sniper and erdw. Then you two duel sniper style :) Again nothing but melee is set in stone. The Duel game type can be made very flexible to handle these other types if we want to. We are still thinking what's the best idea and what the people want.

Two questions.
does this mean that we won't be able to use melee weapons in standard deathmatch/Tdm/ctf/etc?

Does this mean that there's a possibility of more than just the axe and sword making it into th mod???????????

Well we may have to live with a more simple form of melee like the old CUT verison in the Mutator. Until we have all the bugs worked out we dont know for sure.

It might wabbit...it might :spin:

Nice information to hear, sniper duel would be fun, maybe if there were only ERDW and each person had to be good at hitting far away targets without a scope.

I like the sound of that.

We can do alot with the duel gametype, and JB's already got some good ideas there. I like the idea of giving mappers control over alot of that stuff. That's a definate plus. Combine that with other Chaos gametypes (including other Duel variants) and it will truely rock.

there could be all sorts of great duel variants...

like a cuttter duel where you can see your opponent , but there is a windowbetween you , and the only way to kill him is by bouncing a shot around a corner...

or a setup where you have to kill your opponent by lobbing grenades over a tall wall...

Or even an arena where you have to listen to your opponent carefully from behind a wall and kill him/her with a well placed ERDW alt fire shot.

oh what about a rocket duel in which Both players jump out of planes , and have to kill eachother with rockets from 100meters before they both hit the ground (lets say they have 30 seconds)
