Using Melee outside of Dual

Post by phatcat »

I tried to make a search for this topic, but didn't really find anything.

Is it possible to use Melee outside of Dual? I have tried Switch Arsenal, and Worm, but they can't detect the melee weapons in the new version.

Glad you posted this, this was my biggest question because I don't have ut2k3 yet...though in a few days I will, and this will be the first mod for it downloaded. I'm a big The Specialist mod kung fu player in Half-life, and an avid anticipator for Bushido...and if you know either of those then you can tell I'm a big melee guy. Hope you'll have melee in other gametypes soon because I like deathmatch over dueling...was why I never got into JKII, people kept whining that I was randomly attacking when they wanted to initiate duels first.

Well, I think Furry's duel server has a mix of melee and normal CUT2 weapons that change for each map(sh*t, who made FireHall? There's a "exploit" that could really drive people nuts)
Anyway, one of the maps had a few of the melee weapons and the crossbow for your selected weapons
One of the other ones had the bastard sword mixed in with 3-4 other weapons

Is it possible to alter Invasion so that when Melee weapons are chosen as the option, the monster mix changes to include only "melee" type creatures? Skarrj, for instance. Allow them to shoot, but make them stop when a player gets witin a certain range and rush them w/hand weapons. That could be sweet. The monsters would have to be modified to understand and use the melee system, and would need new animations as well. this would be quite a project.

There isn't much a mapper can do about people running away and/or hiding to force a draw. I did what I could about it, but the fact is, without some new rules within the gametype to actually limit a player's ability to do that, there's no way to eliminate it. It's not just Firehall, there are a number of maps (especially Henge) where it very easy to do. If it's too much, just use mapper selection or one of the guns modes, and you can just shoot them when they try to run away.

What I would suggest is maybe putting in a rule that will only kill the player who has the lowest health when the round timer runs out. Either that or allow the spectators to vote on which player will get killed when the timer runs out, and if nobody votes, then it defaults to the player with lowest health...

Having the lowest health player die would cause lamers to run after they get the first lucky hit. A Roman style "Thumbs Down" vote would be a good (and stylish) fix, but if nobody votes, both should die. The loser of the vote should be completely gibbed, destroyed by the watching Chaos powers. I think a game-rule fix for anti-lamer tendencies is unneeded..

Possibly some combination of that and voting then? Sounds like a good way to do it.

Jb, if you code this, be sure not to count self-damage (that is, damage on a pawn that is also the pawn that caused the damage).

This is a terrible idea because is means lamers will get a lucky shot, and then run. Why do we need this change? Duel rocks as is, without all this fiddly rules. Voting is classy, and less arbitrary, because people who avoid losing by uncool play styles will still lose.
