Help on Map traps?

Post by jb »

Folks I got this email from a guy that asked for help on making a trap in a map:
I have the map that is a bathroom were every one is small. I have a light switch on the wall. I would like to make it possible to shoot that switch, and have the exaust fan come on... then shut off on it's own. Then be unavailable for the remainder of the minute. The desired effect is to suck everybody into the fan-of-death, everybody who was above the half-way point in room height. Like the gravity well (my favorite) without the blue ball effect, etc. I like the being whipped around part, but eventually I gotta hit the fan.

My reply:

>That part seems easy to do..you have a trigger and a mover. Shot the
>trigger, trigger moves the mover (switch) as well as activates the
>"sucking effect". I was pretty sure you can set the trigger to reset
>after X seconds.
>For the sucking effect you make Volume/Zone. One shapped like a
>cylnder that goes from the area you want to cover up to the Fan. Then
>make a kill zone were the fan blades are setting. The in the
>Volume/Zone alls you have to do is give the player a high value of
>the Z componet (vertical up/down) of their velocity. Not quite sure
>yet but it should be easy to activate and deactivate this
>Volume/Zone. This should give you the same effect that I think your
>after. And ATM I think you can do it with NO SPECIAL code at all.
>When I get home tonight I can ask our mapper about this and see if
>they think it can be done. If you still want other special effects
>then I can try but not until I get Chaos ready for its PR2 release.

Any better ideas?

That sounds Exactly right to me. If you set up the Event properly, It will take care of all of the timing for ya.

Set the 2 movers. One for the switch and one for the fan. Set up a kill volume around the fan, and a volume for the area you want the fan to effect. Then add a Trigger.
Have the Switch mover trigger the event and the trigger. Set the "Suck" volume to be triggered by the trigger. Set the fan Mover to activate by the event and set the stay open time on both movers, and the trigger to the length of time ya want the effect to go on. Whala, Ya got a cool fan effect. ;)
