Do you reckon the bot AI should be improved?

Hell yeah! The bots suck so bad right now.

Bot AI needs improving

Post by Armagon »

I love the ChaosUT2 duel mode, it's a hell of a lot of fun. However I am really disappointed by the fact that there have been little to no developments in giving the bots some proper AI. I know it's made with the intention that it be played with other people, but there are those of us who don't have access to decently pinging servers or LANs.

All the bots seem to do is run straight toward you, swinging their weapon constantly like it's a feather duster. I'd really like to see some work go into the bot AI so that they'll actually TIME their actions, and can actually pose a challenge to a decent player.

Here's a temporary fix for these problems:

Put the bots on Godlike, add the Vampire and Regeneration mutators on, and play with 7 bots in a very small area, like in Training House, where you run into pillars a lot.

BOT AI for duel is something we can work on. If you ask any coder that has done Uscript for any time what are the 3 hardest things he will say network replication, vehicles and bot ai. Its just not easy. So we can look at it as I do think it can be better then it is now. I know its for duel but some of these tweaks could make it into any Chaos game with melees and bots.

Earlier today to test the ability of the bots, I loaded up DM-Branwen with seven bots on godlike mode to see what would happen. Most of the time all of them were running after me like a mob, waving around their weapons. The whole time all I did was continue running backwards and stabbing at them. In four minutes flat I had 50 kills and no deaths. To me that says, "AI needs some serious work!"

I'm all in favor of Beefing up the bots , but I would like their current stupidity to be kept for when DoC makes its joyous return. One of the things that made the early builds of DoC so fun was that you were fighting against a huge Number of monsters , but killing individual ones was nowhere near as challenging as Duel online. This is not to say that DoC was easy mind you . . . just that the way the Monsters AI worked was perfect for achieving Mobs of Skeletons , acting the way you would expect skeletons to act.

Can't you just make bots spiral in on the player? That would be a big improvement.

yeah as is all i need to do is crouch , back attack ,and crawl forward to instantly kill a bot with like..every weapon because they walk right into you. Even with them on godlike and with every possible cheesy mutator activated they are still just that easy to kill.

Well circle straffing would be the aim. But you'd need to tell the A.I when to attack and when to keep straffing. My suggestion was to just make them attack the player less directly.
