No, we dont get payed in money. We get a diffrent kind of payment.
Please allow me to explain...
About 2 years ago, i walked into an Electronics Boutique I was wearing a Shirt that my Wife had made for me. It was a Chaotic Dreams Team T shirt. It had Proxys on the front with the Name Chaotic Dreams. Not paying any attention to anyone else in the stor i walked up to the PC games section and proceded to pick out a game or 2. Now, Keep in mind that my wife was with me, and she likes nothing less then standing there while i look at the games. At the instance i didnt realise ( until my wife told me) that the clerk behind the counter staired at me from the moment I walked into the store, and followed us at a short distance over to the PC games section. She thought that he thought i might be a theif about to steal from the store. After a few moments the Clerk approached me and asked where i had gotten the t shirt that i was wearing. I told him that my wife had had it made for me, and that it was a Mod team that i was a member of. Well, I didnt get to finish that sentance before the clerk lost his mind and pretty much proclaimed to the entire store that i was some sort of Video Game god. I was really embarassed, and soon realized that the majority of the people in the store had gathered around Me, My Wife, and the Clerk. They were asking me questions about Chaos and giving me comments for about an hour. Now keep in mind that my Wife wants to be in and out of theese stores as fast as humanly possable. When My wife and i went to leave I figured that she was going to be pissed, but she wasnt. She said that she was really proud of me, but added that i was not allowed to ever wear that shirt into a Game Store again.
There moral here is that anything that can keep my wife into a game store for an hour and have her not be pissed off at me when we walk out, well....thats all the payment i need.

Well we do get fan feedback which is a form of payment. But no we all have "real" jobs and do this in our "free" time. We have gotten some money from contest winnings (which we normally share amongst the team).

I've been sorta milking the fame cow here in Arizona, using it to boost attendance at the local conventions that I help out at (Leprecon, Hexacon, Coppercon). I was even invited to TusCon (a sci-fi con in Tucson, AZ) as a guest of honor for my involvement with Chaos. While there, I got to attend the con free of charge and got a much reduced rate on my hotel room (about $50 for all 3 days). I also got to play lots of games and talk to people about Chaos. I even had an interesting discussion with a guy who is writing his own 3d FPS game engine, and I was relating my experiences as a mapper to his experiences in building his worlds in his engine.
So although we don't get paid in money, being a part of Chaos allows us to have some very unique and fascinating experiences, and also lets us create something we can be proud of. I wouldn't trade it for the world.
That said, money doesn't hurt Especially to a starving artist like me

I very much doubt they did. The fact that it is added exposure would seem to me the 'payment'.... now, all you guys need to do is win the current gig, get money in to start your company, and start producing some really neat games.
Be the next Blizzard!
These days, life may be slow, but at least I've got my movie in Post Production.
