That seems to be the biggest confusion.. even with me.. I guess its cuz the DUEL gametype is really the only completely "different" game, the rest is just regarded as a weapon pack, some new maps, and a relic mutator. Smart to keep them all in one pack, but it seems that melee is what people are looking for.
Well thats true duel is the one that stands out the most, but I would call the rest just a pack. See below.
Thats What I think Chaos needs to turn to, something more than just a chop em up and wait till next round, something that allows a story line or goals to be reached via melee and ranged weapons, depending on the situation. And something that is Team based, and more tactical. Gamers like to think to win, its a human nature, something they've earned.
Yeap HH and DoC should be steps to that goal.
I'd say keep the duel gametype as a separate game type for just mano-y-mano combat, but some teambased storyline to get people to realize this is a 250MB Total Conversion, not just a 250MB mutator
You know I have been trying to find a better name to call our mod. we are not a TC yet we have many TC elements. We are not a weapon mut but we have weapons. We are not a few maps mod even though we have maps. We are not a gameplay mod but we do have gametypes. We are not a feature mod we do have some rather cool ones. some of the best weapons out there
fully featured 3d person melee combat system
map items like gravbelt, boots, ChaosInfo Actor (that can act as a min Arean mut that forces the map to have only one type of weapons (nuff said about them)
proxies (yes they deserve their own listing as they are so unquiqe to chaos)
features like Talk Icon/Kick,Sparypaints/Tombstones/Sunflares/grapple/Relics/ect
vehicles

Im just offering my ideas and advice on what I've been noticing for some time now. I too, as much fun as I have on Duel, and as Good as I've gotten, its like I've reached the top and there is nothing more for me in duel. a few new maps are one thing, but there's nothing more for me to reach as far as challenge, and a lot of us veterans are getting to that point. There are no other variables to challenge us aside from the other player's skill, which is why there needs to be a few new moves, some harder to master moves, and some tactical techniques and goals that can change with each time you play the game.
A bit of history is needed. Since the Q2 version of Chaos we have had melee. However the method use was to trace out x units in fron of a person to see if you hit them. With UT99 we were able to add blocking, abeilt is was random. And we improved the timing of the trace to make it more accurate. However after playing JK2 and Rune I wanted to bring that style of melee combat to Unreal as it never has seen this style before. So we set about doing that. We first used DM but those dam bot would grab UT2k4/Chaos waepons and made trouble shooting melee impossible. So Duel was born as a vehicle to test Melee and give us something to play with. I remember Duel from the JK game so used the same name (note: Never let Jb make names again). We thought Duel might have a few fans. It exceeded our wildest expectations.
Come on devs, we're hungry for something new in duel. Feed us...
You're best part is duel, just IMHO. Please, work on duel...
We
do hear that you need something new. And we know you love Duel. However Chaos is much more than Melee/Duel. We have been around for 6 years before this Melee/Duel came about. We were on two expansion CDs (ID's extremties Q2 CD and Epic's UT99 GOTY CD) that did not have this Melee/Duel. We have been featured in many magazines/websites before this Melee/Duel came to be. We also finnished 2nd in the very first MSU with out this Melee/Duel. So part of the problem is we have a very, very long history and we CAN NOT ingnore that.
We also had a very spirted agurement in the dev sections. Some members were upset that we were being viewed as a melee mod. So the key to happyness is balance. There are people like Deathstorm and Genman1 that dont really care for Melee (infact I have never Seen Genman1 charge me with his melee..its always his ERDW....hehehe). Flak and her server also use to run non-melee games as well. Back when it ran.
So we do understand that we need to keep your guys into melee with updates. But we also can not ignore our roots and the other things that make Chaos great. Melee does not make Chaos a mod. Melee makes Chaos a BETTER mod.
I hope DoC is well on its way, before CCTF as that too would be another original type of game play.
CCTF is already there. We need to add a few more features to it but you can play it now
Loq hit it on the head. We are always working on new stuff. And we will not purposally overlook things. We know we created a Duel Community. Now we need to take care of them or they will go some place else. However we also can not forgot what got us here is the other things that you guys dont care for. So balance is needed. Now if we had 20 more people than it would not be a problem to work in small teams (say a group works on gametypes, another works on weapons, another works on vehicles, another works on melee, ect). However we dont have enough to do the work we have now. There are some thing we have planed over a year ago that are still not done. We have other code for working weapons, gametypes, weapons that are hidden or set aside for when we can come back to it. There are items in your binaries folder of features that are done but the code is not (the model of the specator camera).
Loq's right we probably wont share anything soon. However if a few of you would like to work with us on our team then we can have you help tweak our melee for everyone
