Too bad I won't have a good enough computer for a LOOOOOOOOONG time

ive read that Steam also dl's over 100mb....Thanks Valve, due to you people have to install a steaming pile of dungneolith wrote:Ok, now that I've played about an hour of HL2 I must admit that it's indeed one of the best games I've ever played! It does just the same to me like the original HL - I am amazed by its gameplay!
However at the same time STEAM is the worst thing I've ever encountered in gaming since I started playing SpaceInvaders on a penny arcade when I was a little kid!
Since it links up with Valve during the install and everytime you play, people without internet access cannot play the game. Same for notebook user without WLAN. Stupid!
Also if STEAM has to do that, why-oh-why do I have to enter a code as long as my arm? I thought STEAM just did a check via internet if I do have an original copy. I payed for the game and in contrast to those who run a cracked copy, I am the poor bastard to mess with the darn copy protection?
And to make it even better STEAM takes ages to initialize, check back on the currently installed games and their files and to start the game.
If the game wasn't so good this far, I would've returned it by now.
Well I thought there was a way to play in off-line mode? Also the idea was you could get the latest updates to you game auto-magicly this way. I know anytime I play CS:S It usally has to download a few things before I can play. Thats kind of cool...neolith wrote:Since it links up with Valve during the install and everytime you play, people without internet access cannot play the game. Same for notebook user without WLAN. I got my version of HL2 via ATIs 9600 i got a last year. So I installed steam a few months ago. It synce up and started to download all of the HL1 stuff. Then the CS:S stuff. Finally the HL2 stuff. For this type of method I only had to enter the one code (from the ATI card) once and never really have had to mess with it. Its been quite painless...so I guess now its a mixed bag. Some have lots of trouble slow down and issues. Others have none..If the game wasn't so good this far, I would've returned it by now.
If anyone knows how to do this, please tell me!jb wrote:Well I thought there was a way to play in off-line mode? Also the idea was you could get the latest updates to you game auto-magicly this way. I know that it might make updating a lot easier (especially for CS, where the updates for some time came faster than you could dl them), but other Games like WarCraft3 or Diablo did the same thing without an annoyance like STEAM...
Plus I don't play CS anymore. And I didn't touch the old HL1 either. I just want to play HL2. So I guess you're right jb, it depends on how you use the software. Or how you don't use it.
if you dont have net you cant enable and download the 100mb of files needed to run the game, its just for showPepito wrote:nono , im pretty sure that at one point I was asked whether I wanted to continue in offline mode when my net went out . . .TKATK wrote: THere is no offline play mode
