Cannot install
Hi,
new with UT2004, but old with UT99 (already using Chaos for that).
I have brandnew install of UT2004, patch, ECE pack.
Adding to that two community map packs, two other mappacks, only adding maps, nothing else.
Then Came Strike Force, Deathball, and Troopers.
Then I tried umod install of Chaos 3.6 clicking the icon - nothing happens. Put it into the UT2004 folder and tried again - nothing. It does not install.
For comparision: the same with the u4e mod. The Umod version did not install. I then got the zip-version, put the files into correct places manually, the mod is recognized in the mutatopr screen, but cannot be configured, and the new eapons never appear.
I tried a tool the u4e site told me about, to check something about file connection and registry entries, but it did not come up with everything. They also mentioned to enter some lines into the Unreal.ini and use a manifest.ini file inculding u4e - still nothing.
So I ask you about the umopd-version of Chaos - why does it not install? The other three mods work flawlessly, the game itself also flawlessly, system in top shape (WinXP install and all just three weeks old). Regular defragging.
Any help, please?

Update:
i have deleted the whole UT2004 installation, cleaned the registry (manually, the deinstall routine did not work too well), defragged, and reinstalled UT2004, patch 3355 and ECE, then tried Chaos umod immediately without other stuff added first - but a non-starter again. Finally found a zip-version of chaos 3.6 full, did as the readme told me - and cannot find the mod within the game. Giving up on chaos now.
Tried u4e, too, same zero result as before. But added map packs and the before mentioned three mods - all working like a charm again. Could have spared me the hours of work - the defragging after reinstall of UT2004 not counted which still needs to be done and will spend another 75 minutes.
Not really a delightful experience.
Ciao,

Woowie, you really took to the extremes,The fix is reinstalling the patch after ece(patch, ece, patch)
installing ece botches up umod association and patch fixes that
About finding chaos:Go into community menu>Mods>ChaosUT2...adding the lines to UT2004.ini gives you only the mutator and new models in stock UT(not gametypes)
also create another UT shortcut and add -MOD=ChaosUT2 to the end so it looks like C:\Games\UT2004\System\UT2004.exe -MOD=ChaosUT2 to boot up chaos without going into community menu
Please report if it works,or doesnt

Hu, just finished the installation of the working stuff so far, and now I should re-run 3355, or copy a 1.1 version of ECE over the existing ECE - risking of doing I-don't-know-what to my complete virgin-installation...?
I started a 10:00 this day, and now it is closing 18:00 - please understand that I am very hesitant to do installations on top of existing installations as long as I am not 100% sure that it does not do any damage.

You misunderstood me, somehow.
after my failed experiments I have completed installation of the other stuff that works okay, now it is 9.2 GB of UT2004 folder, without chaos and without u4e. Some of the installed mods seem to write to ini-files or other essential files, and when I repatch now the whole thing with ECE 1.1 I maybe get Chaos working - at the cost of needing to reinstall the other things. Or the other way around. Or nothing.
I will copy and paste your advise and will do it that way once I ever need to reinstall UT again. But I am not willing to risk the current installation again after today's long ours of data-riding.
As I remember the readme it didn't say what was said here, in reply to my question. Maybe a good idea to bring that readme up to date, eh?
thanks, see you again for the next patching round - who knows when

you cannot lose data, you cannot damage anything with chaos unless you copy the content of the chaosut folder into the ut install folder
Okay
first of all, whats the problem exactly, chaos doesnt show up?
if yes, then go into community on the menu, user mods and activate chaosut
if it doesnt work, check if there is a folder ChaosUT2 in the install folder
If you cant install, then reinstall the patch(you dont have to reinstall mods after patching, dont worry)
ini lines are needed for U4E (chaosut too if you want the mutator in non-chaos UT) and cannot damage anything,as you can just delete UT2004.ini and a new one will reappear next time you start UT(thus making it very hard to screw a install up)

This may be like you say, chaos doesn't hurt, yes, but before I need to patch again, right...? With 1.1 ECE, or re-run 3355, and this is what worries me now, I have used 1.0 ECE after patch 3355, I red nowhere that it should be the other way around or 1.1 ECE instead - when I was told here, I already was some steps further. It took a lot of time, the whole day I played around with installing, that's why I don't want to risk loosing the additional stuff that I meanwhile installed again. Too time-consuming, the defragging alone costs close to two hours. (9+ GB data completely red)
You understand now? I will do as you told me - when I install the next time everything from scratch on. Don't want to make today's hours-consuming experience again too soon. right now i have a stable, reliable UT configuration, with plenty of additional maps, and four or five major mods. don't want to run all that again - just because running 3355 or ECE 1.1 looses some of these (the mods) again.
I liked your Chaos mod for UT99, will not forget to include it - the next time I do that patching dance again.

reinstalling the wrong patch/pack wont do anything bad, will just leave it a it is
ECE version doesnt matter...dont mind that
Okay
first install patch(youve done that)
second install ece(any version,already done)
third install patch(do that)
And just to be safe, here are a few tips so you cant mess it up:
Never ever accept overwriting stock files
Dont touch default.ini
UT2004 and User .ini's regenerate after being deleted...so dont be afraid of adding lines to them
ECE version doesnt matter...dont mind that

Now you find me completely confused - >>what second patch?<< As I understand it, there is
patch 3355
ECE 1.0 (full)
-or -
ECE 1.1 (also full, haven't found it as a patch to be put on top of 1.0 something different).
What second patch?
I have patched 3355 and then ECE 1.0.
Are ALL ini-files not touched by reinstalling ECE or 3355? What I have so far has written some things these files, if they get replaced with new ones, the modifications are gone - and I can start again.

it was like sequence to do
Install the patch(youve already done that)
Install ECE(youve already done that)
REINSTALL THE PATCH
ECE 1.1 is just a repack of 1.0...the same, doesnt matter
they dont fudge up anything, inlcuding ini's(make backups if youre extra scared of losing a couple of lines...which wont happen)
UT is proapbly the only game where it is near to impossible to mess your game up by accident

Hm, yes, my nerves seem to be a bit weak now ... I did that now, reinstalled the 3355, and wonder oh wonder - the umod for chaos is working. While a different weapons mod is gone and CTF4 works erratic. Umod for u4e also worked, and the mod functions, can be deactivated, too.
BUT CHAOS CANNOT BE TURNED OFF!?!?
Deselected the Chaos-Mutator (running as only mutator), but the models and weapons stay. Tried the help-files, but the phenomenon seems to be unknown there.

Okay, I red the HTML carefully, found out about the community-option for Chaos-type gameplay, fine, but even in normal UT mode, when I take away ALL mutators and should expect UT default - Chaos waepons insist on replacing all, even when I turn on U4E mod and random cycle weapons - they cycle between U4E and chaos weapons. The UT-default weapons are gone. I also don't see a way of how to deactivate the Chaos-style bots. Think this mod really deserves it's name. And that's why, after some rest, it will get rid off this all during next week - means install everything again. I like to have things clean and tidy, and a bit less chaotic.
It looks good, especially flame throwers, but the trimmings and surroundings are a bit rough. Problems are worth to think again about the polishing, team!
But I will miss those giggling mines.
Cheers,
Skybird

Thanks, but just fyi - it doesn't sound like you actually had any issues caused by Chaos, outside of maybe a corrupted download or something. Epic's packs and patches are beyond our control.
If you have not activated the mod, and have not selected our mutator, but are playing on a Chaos map, then you still might see this happen.
And also, any time you try to play with more than one weapon swapping mod/mutator at once, you do so at your own risk.
Some things work together and some just don't.
If you have activated the mod, then by default our weapons will rotate, regardless if you select the mutator or not (you can choose other options via the GUI as well).in normal UT mode, when I take away ALL mutators and should expect UT default - Chaos waepons insist on replacing all, even when I turn on U4E mod and random cycle weapons
