Online manual - feeling helpful?

Post by R.Flagg »

I have spent a lot of time recently trying to get our online manual up to date for the next version. If anyone would like to help kinda read thru it, look for errors or make suggestions, I would be grateful.

http://chaotic.beyondunreal.com/docs/intro_ut2004.php

And FYI - when Mass get's time from his book learnin', we'll probably be removing a few dead links and whatnot from our BU site as well.

Just continued efforts to bring this old beast 'back up to speed'. Any help is appreciated.

Not totally sure if you want grammar/typo stuff, but here's what I've found:

Getting Started

"What we have attempted to do, as always, is to expand the game, bring some nice variety to your play, but to do it in a way, where (hopefully) it won't be so easy to tell where UT2004 ends, and Chaos begins"

This looks better:
"What we have attempted to do (as always) is to expand the game, bring some nice variety to your play, but to do it in a way where (hopefully) it won't be so easy to tell where UT2004 ends, and Chaos begins"

That sentence is very comma happy... I dunno if this is a better way of expressing it, but it looked better to me this way

For some reason the use of 'thru' is weird. Personally, I prefer 'through' but that's up to you.

Install

A quick way to sometimes deal with the manifest stuff is just to patch over what's currently installed with the latest version. Also, the ECE pack and BP2 (Mega Pack) cause umods to break needing a re-patching once they're done.

In the music extract folder, shouldn't the note about PR3.0 be removed since PR3.0 is ChaosUT for 2k4? Or is this for legacy's sake in case anyone is still running 2k3?

"This way even after a zip install you can still have a custom Chaos shortcut on your desktop, with it's own icon."

change to: "This way, after a zip install you can still have a custom Chaos shortcut on your desktop with it's own icon."

Starting CUT2004

Not entirely sure why the first block of text is preceded by a "Note" delimiter. Section works fine without it.

Again, through vs. thru. Just a style thing.

For starting ChaosUT (Mod) from the UT2004 Community menu, maybe a quick screen shot or two to show how this is done (for the uber n00bs in the backseats)?

"Note: with the exception of Duel! For design reasons Duel loads without features such as the grappling hook, and gravity belts. To add these features to your Duel games, simply add the Chaos mutator."

Change to: "Note: For design reasons Duel loads without features such as the grappling hook, and gravity belts. To add these features to your Duel games, simply add the Chaos mutator."

"Then hit the Select Map tab"... if they're following the steps you actually select the game type you want to play and the game brings you to the map selection screen automatically. I would change this to: "Select your game type"...

There's a nice footer at the bottom of the page you guys are using for this section... Maybe put that at the bottom of each page? I think it'd be best after the menu links.

Configs

I would change the indentation of the list if you can. Make the section headings all the way on the right, indent a little for the menu items, and then indent a little more to describe the options for the items. It just looks off right now. And use a different font color maybe for the section headings?

Not entirely sure why the GUI keybinds section is indented, same with the .ini section. Looks like the centering is causing it along with the table being a different size?

Server Setup

It might be redundant, but can you mirror the information from the config menu items in here? I'm sure server admins will appreciate it. And put the .ini stuff in here too. Actually, if you could detail what options are what in the .ini file in here that would be great since that is what admins deal mostly in I believe (or at least I did when I was running a server).

Also, can you put that footer in all sections?

Weapons

Make the NEW stand out more (bold and/or color it).

Goes without saying, but in game shots of the CPP please.

There's a double space in the AWO paragraph for the crossbow: "start cranking"

Personally, I liked having the in game screenshots in the page... :(

Explosive Grenade description: 'The' not 'Then' right?

Delete the comma in the second sentence for the poison grenades

Disruptor grenade: second comma in first sentence isn't needed. I think.

"visual sensors that are directed towards it..., but be advised that these effects wear off fairly quickly. "

Change to: "visual sensors that are directed towards it... But be advised that these effects wear off fairly quickly. "

"and he will definatly be affected, delayed, and probably very annoyed.., but only briefly."

Change to: "and he will definatly be affected, delayed, and probably very annoyed... But only briefly." Same as above (although I'm less sure here, the comma doesn't look right though)

Claw2: "However, to make the most of this weapon, one must learn to use the various ammo types, and firing methods,"

Change to: "However, to make the most of this weapon, one must learn to use the various ammo types and firing methods,"

"Perhaps in this case more so than any other weapon,"

Change to: "Perhaps more so than any other weapon,"

"mad while they are at work..., they just might turn on you!"

Change to: "mad while they are at work... they just might turn on you!"

Make the NOTE: at the end about SpyProxy not available in Duel stick out more.

Make the AWO centered to match all the other AWOs (or maybe not... I dunno, since this is a detail on the Claw2 AWO)

"and grapple like mad to get near your opponent..., who by this"

Change to: "nd grapple like mad to get near your opponent... who by this"

Cutter: Lots of wasted space here. Move the ammo pickup higher or something....

MUG: Get rid of the extra colons in the weapon name header (doesn't match style of previous entries)

ERDW: Remove the colon in the aka part.

Again, wasted space, move the ammo pickup image?

Sniper Rifle: Center the rest of the AWO details.

"You will also see tracer bullets while using the standard ammo. (and so will your enemy)"

Change to: "You will also see tracer bullets while using the standard ammo (and so will your enemy)."

CUT Rocket Launcher: Make an actual AWO entry for this. Might be better to just scrap this and make a real entry for this, not just mentioning it as an extension of the stock rocket launcher. And replace the UT2003 screenshot

Vortex: "Each vortex launcher comes equipped with an orb held by the launcher's field, when released, this orb counts down a short timer, and then activates, resulting in a miniture black hole that sucks the air nearby... and anything that happens to be caught in that air" Holy run on sentence </high school english teacher> Can something be done about that?

Turret: "t takes a few seconds for that to happen though, and if your are killed first"

Change to: "t takes a few seconds for that to happen though, and if you are killed first"

"It will then begin to scan it's surroundings"

Change to: "It will then begin to scan its surroundings"

"But by pressing the Chaos Switch Ammo key"

Change to "But by pressing the Chaos 'Switch Ammo' key"

Re-add the lil' size comparison picture to the "original documentation" blurb.

No problem. I didn't get to the the game types so expect comments on those in the next day or two..

Oh and take my "corrections" with a grain of salt, grammar isn't exactly my strong suit at times but what I mentioned are things that jumped out at me. I guess that's to be expected going to an engineering school where we're only required to take 5 Humanities & Arts classes...

Items & Features:

Just some quick things regarding information, not grammar/etc (since thats my weakness).

Relics: Some of the relic descriptions tell you how to recognize it on an opponent (ex: vengeance mentions the laugh, regeneration the green glow). Some do not (strength does not, vampirism does not explicitly unless it is only an effect of blood coming to the vampire

Kick: Note to set the keybind is not like the other notes in this section. It should read similar to the one for the Invasion Proxy.

Spraypaint: need to have a note about binding a key to spray paint. Current note should not be italicized since only the keybind notes have been.

Awards: Pain lord has a black background, others have white. IMO it should be transparent for all unless theres a compelling reason to have the backgrounds.

Chalk Outlines/ Tombstones: Dont the outlines require projectors turned on? Cant remember.

Lens Flare - Also works on the various lasers. Wasnt reading the section on the weapons so dont remember if its mentioned there, and i know there was some reason to differentiate between the two in the past, but figured id mention it. Also, dont lens flare and the poison/fire HUD animation require a graphics option? I seem to remember there being a way to disable them via fiddling with graphics, though this might have been fixed.

Gametypes

Chaos CTF -

Chaos CTF: italicized part is centered, makes second line look funny in relation to rest of the text. Also: is bot support automatic or do you have to do a "get our flag" command like you had to do for "Get their flag" in bot orders? I would assume its automatic but might want to clarify.

Chaos CTF rules: manta meat - this means teammates i would assume, might want to clarify.

Chaos CTF Misc Info: warmup mentioned here again (was mentioned above).

Duel -

Entering Game of Chaos Duel - for one, it should be "a" game of chaos duel. Last tab is mentioned as "escape", should be "Game" according to screen shot next to it.

All i had time for (through Entering Game of Chaos Duel Section). Ready and waiting for the next update =p

That's very kind of you Jedi, thanks.

Be even better if your next post was in dev section.

Yes, it was great for him to post the info here.

I simply meant it would be nice to have him back working on Chaos again.

As much as i would like to in some ways, unfortunately i just dont have the time. About a year ago i started coding for a research team here at school, and my latent coding time has been focused into that. Couple that with the fact that i dont play UT that much anymore means little time for Chaos.

However, it is always fun to see what you guys are cooking up, so i try to check in occasionally =)

Vehicles page added to online manual:

http://chaotic.beyondunreal.com/docs/ve ... ut2004.php

still WIP, Bike text for example is just placeholder mumbo jumbo at the moment. And already part of the HB text may have to change as the next update Jb gives me is probably going to have full Belt control while riding Board.

Comments and suggestions still welcome. On vehicles page or any part of manual.
