optimazing my hard drive (C:\)

Post by Romulus777 »

I can't tell you how many times I've seen that horrible message telling me that I'm running out of room on my hard drive. I've used the disk utility cleaner, removed all non-required and unused programs, and deleted any unneeded files (like my umods. yeah, I found a way to use them on the unreal wiki) and I still only have 5% of free space. I'm not removing UT, nor WoW, or any of the 10s of 100s of games I play on a weekly basis. how else can I add space?

If you have nothing left to remove, then new HDD is about your only option. You can try to compress files. Dont forget to clear out caches and other temp folders (like your brower) to get back some space..

If your running XP and using system restore make sure you clean out all the older check points.

Have you done a defrag? (No, that does not mean that you attempt to ressurect everyone whom you have killed in UT)

Or, as jb said, you can get another HDD...

Well, a defrag doesn't give you any more space. It just arranges the files physically on the HD so the needle doesn't have to go everywhere just to get files. Makes accessing the files quicker. I think getting another HD will be your answer.

Delete the pr0n, that should clear up a lot of space.

Even if it were a solution defrag really won't work correctly on a drive with less than 15% of free space. Harddrives are cheap these days and very easy to install. If you truly feel intimidated by the installation process you can get an external drive instead or have someone you know (or pay someone) who has the required technical skill to install an internal one. External drives are generally more expensive than internal ones for the same amount of storage.
If you have a cd or dvd burner burn off things you aren't using. How small of a harddrive do you have?

I was defraging my comp while I was writing this. Yes it worked I got an extra 1% of free space. (and oddly enough 11 files wouldn't move. All of them from UT.)

The best way to deal with it is to get a virus, and have to format your hdd, worked for me  . I had a full hdd (like you) but once i was forced to lose everything, it was far easier, because i just installed things i needed. (probably half your hdd is filled with junk, you just dont know where it is).

I know you wont like the idea, but it does work.

Or force a friend to put your stuff on their computer that has a bigger hdd, telling them its just for a week, but leaving it there for a few years. (another trick i learned)

if you have an ipod with lots of room, that also works well.

I suppose you don't need the virus..... but it just makes sure you dont get cold feet half way through.... and also stops you from backing up (which is bad because it means you end up with all the files you had before). :)

Yep, thats the best way to do it.

but.....

ONLY PUT YOUR BACKUPS BACK ONYO YOUR PC WHEN THEY ARE NEEDED!!!!

follow that rule and you will be fine.

dont bother buying a new hdd, i have an 80GB, i used to have a 800MB and they took the same amount of time to fill up, who knows why. i think they are really just selling the same size hdds, they just say they are bigger...

My old pc was the best, 0.3 ghz 32mb, no gpu, win95, 800MB.... only thing i was proud of was the sound card... i wonder if i can move it into my new pc?

yeah, even an external 80gb is cheap as - in the UK (we pay lots for everything) its only about £45 at most.

Or jump onto ebay and get an ultra cheap one.
