A lot of people were telling me to get Linux as a backup OS to windows as Linux:
1)is not prone to viruses (yet)
2)is not suseptible to unexplained crashes
3)is much easier to use and understand than windows
I hope to become a 'xpert 1337 haxxor' too someday!

Argh, i meant to type cdrom >HDD>Floopy for the first option.
yes, this will erase all your data, hence the point of formatting. any sort of repair etc is basically a waste of time, they never work as well as a clean install. This also goes for things such as upgrades, which never seem to function as reliably as a clean full install. just copy all or your important data to cd and wipe it all off your hdd.
As long as you have a boot disk for XP you can follow the above steps to install a clean system.
as for linux.....bleagh.
the arguement for lack of virus's is the same as ive heard pro apple users boasting about. fact is, its untrue. any OS is succeptable to virus attacks, and the flipside about windows is, since it is often attacked theres lots of help availiable. im not so sure about what help there is for apple users or linux. Oh yeah, and do you really want to wait for ages for games to be converted to play linux? look at how long ut2003 took to come out for linux, it was a good six months after the windows release.
ease of use? thats not a good enough reason to be honest, im sure apple users find Mac OS easy, but its all what your used to. im used to windows so learn new windows OS very quickly. put me on a mac and i spend yonks double clicking stuff and getting hacked at macos for doing it all single click (Hate it). surely any OS will also crash after extended use, as any hard disk will eventually develop errors with constant add/removal of data. hence linux arguements = gash.

Hmmm...
About the reinstalling of windows, I dont think i can do it... too much stuff on hdd (50 gb worth of programming, projects, etc.) and no boot disk for windows XP. will attempt repair only...
About linux... THANK YOU! I have been looking for suitable anti-linux arguments all over the place and these are FANTASTIC!!!

My main dislike of windows: it treats you like an idiot
My main dislike of Linux: it treats you like you actually know what your doing

seriously, if you tell it to do something (such as format your C drive) it'll do it, no "are you sure" or anything. Which is the lesser of 2 evils?

Amen to that. I personally think unix systems have excellent command line environments, but the GUI's generally aren't to my taste. As for UT on linux, I have heard rumors of it running considerably faster(like 20 fps faster or somthing crazy like that), and if a game isn't released for linux yet, well, there's always WINE. In fact, there are game specific versions of wine I believe. If I were setting up a new computer for myself, I'd probably make it dual boot. That way I'd get the best of both worlds.

50gb is a lot to be honest (wuss), so i dont blame you for being hesitant...however...repairing xp is a bit of a bodge in my opinion.
BTW, it doesnt have to be a boot disk specific to xp. it just has to be a windows disk that will allow you to get to the command prompt. i myself use a win98 cd, since creating a boot disk for xp requires you to do it online, and i cant be bothered. regardless of what you do, im sure as always it'll be nasty and time consuming, so have fun! lol
