YADU (Yet Another Devlopement Update) :)

Post by jb »

So its Friday and the weekend is near....thought we would let you know on the progress

- Melee: Is still broke in on-line games. I have been playing with it for the better part of 2 weeks with no luck yet. I have given up and sent a question to Epic to see if they can help :( This is our current gating item. I have another IR ready for the team but I will not release it until I get the on-line stuff for melee fixed. However Loq, Neo have been able to make a few nice weapons for it.

- Turrets: Due to some techincal issues that would have resulted in a bunch of extra work for you guys to control the turrets, for now they will only have a veiw camera on them. Gasman was able to fix some issues with them. So far their logic (2nd in complexity to the proxy mine as far as being complicated) seems to work. Also a user, Vid, might be doing the model for on on the turrets. I dont have his link with me know but they were some nice looking turrets. Him and Spa were going to work on this. Also sounds are in for the turrets as well.

- Claw2: We still have to decied on how to best handle the AWO on this weapon. Couple of good ideas in the dev section but nothing solid yet. Spa was able to deliver on the basic model of the needle ammo. Your gonna like that one :)

- MUG/CPP: CaptinKewl was able to finnish (or almost finnish) most of the Firepart of the weapon and has made some progress on the CPPs. Oh Chris is back (had some ISP issues) and will be uploading a preview pick of the CPP models soon :)

- Duel: For most parts the core logic is done. We need to finalize the weapons load out (Melee, all weapons, only chaos weapons, mappers choice) ect. But the gameplay seems to work well. Currently at the end of a round we play two sound bytes. One if for a flawless victory (you beat your oponet without taking damge). The other is just a standard you win message. Here is a first pass pic of the scoreboard:

Image

Let me explain it. The top two boxes shows who is currently "dueling". Then I have a space and draw the rest of the players. The rest of the players are sorted by score. If your dead, then I use a "grey" color. If you alive then I use a more white color (Asp box in that pic above just turned to grey after I killed her). Again it could change or it could be the final deal. We will talk about it and see but it should work ok. Thanks to DJ for his help/work on Duel. We will probably redo the HUD but have no idea how to handle that or what it should look like. Remember jb = stinks at designing huds :)

Ok so another week another update:

Duel - Finnished the GUI stuff (menus, huds, scoreboards). Tweaked some of the rules and have all four options in and working. Have one or two issue left to decide on (Ie have it one death and you set out, or best 2/3) and then just left to bug killing.

The model team cranked out a few more killer models.

Got melee more or less working on-line now so we are trying to merge that code into our main body of code.

Got at 2 duel maps completed and more should pop up soon.

Bunch of other tweaks to the code. Sorry dont have a lot of time to explain but we do have another IR coming out this weekend so watch for a better update then...

10/3 Update:

Well kind of a good week but not a lot of progress that we can show you. That does not mean we did not get any done, just most of the progress was done on the code side.

Loq completed an Two Handed Hammer
Mars sent out two Duel Maps as well as Deus still fine tunned his Duel Map.
Lots of nasty bugs were squished.
Still have not the last part of melee working on-line yet. We are close but lack on minor point (its I think a vector math error as I think I need to add in rotation to the mix).
Tweaked Duel a bit, moved some the menus around and added a best 2/3 option (so instead of one kill your out, first one two get 2 kills wins that round.
We will try to get some update screen shots out for you soon.

Dev Up 9/6/2003

Yeap I know not a Friday. But we got the last major bug out of the on-line melee system so it works now :) We still have a few minor issues but they are small stuff (i.e. not spawning sparks when your weapon hits a wall in network games)

Not much more to add. So far the feedback from the IR with working Melee seemed to be good. We have a few minor network issues to iron out. But they are minor (like spawning a spark on the clients PC when your sword hits a wall in an on-line game). The model of the CPP seems to be all done. As soon as it gets skinned we will have a pic for you. Also we will try to get a list of melee weapons in the Duel game type. So far I think we have 5/6 of them done (or close to being done).

Right at about the time for another update, eh? or at least more pics?

Since the contest deadline is being pushed back does that mean that the next release will be pushed back too? Or how about releasing it a little early so we can find all the bugs so it will be perfect for the contest?

<img src="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/boardpics/mic.gif" align="left"> The <a href="http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~chaotic/index.php" target="_blank">web site</a> has a some info, but yes, we are going to be use the delay for continued work on the mod. But as far as updates, well, the fact is that right now, we're not sure exactly what's going to make it into the next release and what isn't, but I suppose there's a few things that we start posting anyway. Just remember that everything is subject to change on you, or even disappear.

Couple of the main things going on right now are the melee fighting system, and the Duel game type. Duel was mainly designed to use our melee fighting in, but has grown beyond that now. But whichever mode you play, basically 2 players enter the map and fight it out, while everyone else waits in line for their turn. If you lose, you go to the end of the line, if you win, you stay in the map. After somebody get's enough victories, the map changes.

There are 4 choices of 'weapon sets' to play Duel with.

<blockquote>Melee - pick your melee weapon before entering map, and go at it.
UT2K3 - you play with all the standard UT2003 weapons
Chaos - you play with the Chaos weapons
Map - Duel map authors can sorta pre-select a few weapons for each map, and it's pretty much different for every map. <br>Pick this option, and you'll play with whatever the author of that map selected. </blockquote><br>
Chaos Duel has menus:

<a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... u_beta.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... _beta_.jpg" border="0" align="left"></a>

There's a beta menu for Duel. You've selected the Duel game type, and now you're picking a map. Those are maps in testing listed there.

<a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... esmenu.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... smenu_.jpg" border="0" align="left"></a>
This is where you can select which weapons option you will use. And other stuff, like if you want the rounds to be 'Best 2 outta 3', or how many 'Victories' before map changes, etc.

<a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... memenu.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... emenu_.jpg" border="0" align="left"></a>
This is after map has loaded, it's the Welcome menu. You are shown which weapons are in use, name of the map, and told if it's 2 outta 3 for this server, etc. Oh, and if it's a melee match, you'll pick your weapon here as well.

Chaos Duel has maps:

<a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... arena1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... rena1_.jpg" border="0" align="left"></a>

This Arena map by Shadowstar is pretty cool. There's a cheering crowd, waiting and watching for somebody to get a messy frag, or for a player to get ripped up or gored by one of the blades or spikes which you'll find here.

<a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... ation1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... tion1_.jpg" border="0" align="left"></a>

This map by Marsfyre is called Excavation. It's a great looking vertical mine shaft kinda thing, and it works well with all the weapons, or melee IMO.

<a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... ernus1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... rnus1_.jpg" border="0" align="left"></a>

This one has cool castle ruins laying about, it's by Shuriken and is called Internus, and I think it plays best with melee weapons.

<a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/boa ... a_beta.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/boa ... _beta_.jpg" border="0" align="left"></a>

Another by Shuriken, called Manta. Surrounded by water, and yet it's also a low grav arena. It's got a lift on each end of arena too, combined with UT2003's double-jumping, and low grav, this one makes for an interesting battle.

<a href="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... cient1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.planetunreal.com/chaotic/scr ... ient1_.jpg" border="0" align="left"></a>

This is Ancient Decree by Marsfyre. Another great looking map, and this time showing some early beta shots of possible sword effects.

There's more..... (including <a href="http://forums.chaoticdreams.org/viewtopic.php?t=2075" target="_blank">this thread</a>, where LoQ shows some skin), but that's it for now.
